A field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rahmatpur, Barisal and Regional Pulses Research centre Madaripur during the rabi season of 2016-17 to estimate the effective dose of mineral nutrients for cowpea yield maximization. Five treatments were included in the study viz. T1= (Control), T2= (20-20-20 NPK kg/ha), T3 =(20-20-20-10 NPKS kg/ha), T4= (20-20-20-10-2 NPKSZn kg/ha) and T5= (20-20-20-10-2-1.5 NPKSZnB kg/ha).The yield of cowpea increased significantly due to the application of S, Zn and B. The highest seed yield (1612kg /ha) at Barisal and (1885kg /ha )at Madaripur were produced in treatment T5 (20-20-20-10-2-1.5 NPKSZnB kg/ha) and the lowest obtained from control plot (1438 kg/ha )and (971kg/ha)respectively.

Under the above circumstances, management of fertilizer may be the way to increase the yield of cowpea, major objectives are to manage different fertilizers including micronutrient

The field experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rahmatpur, Barisal and Madaripur during the rabi season of  2016-17.The trial consisted of five treatments such as T1=Control, T2 = 20-20-20 NPK kg/ha, T3 = 20-20-20-10 NPKS kg/ha, T4=20-20-20-10-2 NPKSZn kg/ha, T5=20-20-20-10-2-1.5  NPKSZnB kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 4m×3m. The nutrient status of the initial soil sample of the experimental plot at Rahmatpur, Barisal and Madaripur. All the fertilizers were applied and incorporated into the soil during final land preparation. The variety was BARI Felon-1. Seeds were sown at the rate of 50 kg ha-1 on 16 December 2016 at Barisal and 5 January 2017 at Madaripur. The seeds were sown in furrows at 40 cm x 10 cm spacing at a depth of 2 to 3 cm below the soil surface. Irrigation was applied twice at 15 and 30 days after sowing. Intercultural operations such as thinning, weeding, applying insecticides were done as and necessary. The mature pods of cowpea were harvested three times. At maturity, seed yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and collected data were analyzed statistically.

Yield and yield characters of cowpea as influenced by different doses of nutrients. The plant height did not vary significantly among the treatments at harvest. The highest plant height was observed in T5 (119.90 cm) followed by T4 (121.30 cm) and the lowest was in the control plot (106.30 cm). The maximum pod length was in the treatment T5 (16.74 cm) followed by T4 (16.51 cm), T3 (16.37 cm) and the lowest recorded from in control (15.90 cm). Although the higher number of pods/plant was recorded in the treatment T5 (17.87) but was statistically similar with T4 (17.13). The lowest number of pods/plants was produced in the control treatment (T1) (14.87). Seeds per pod were varied significantly among the treatments T5 (15.27), T4 (15.07) and T3 (14.67). The minimum numbers of seeds were recorded in the treatment T1 (13.20). The highest 100 seed wt. was observed in treatment T5 (11.76) followed by T4 (11.06) and the least in treatment T1 (9.22) where no nutrients were applied. Seed yield of cowpea varied significantly as influenced by different doses of nutrients. Although treatment T2 (1524 kg ha-1), T3 (1561 kg ha-1) and T4 (1587 kg ha-1) did not differ in respect of seed yield significant difference was observed with T1 (1438 kg ha-1) receiving no S i.e. the effect of S is evident. The application of sulphur significantly enhanced the number of pods/plant, number of seed/pod, seed yield. Application of Zn applied in the T4 (1587 kg ha-1)increased significantly higher yield than T2 and T3. Application of zinc increased grain yield of cowpea found by Oseni T. O (2009). Treatment T5 produced the highest seed yield of cowpea (1612 kg ha-1) than all other treatments differing statistically with T4 express the contribution of B on the seed yield of cowpea. Foliar application of boron showed significant influence on the growth and yield of attributes of cowpea. The highest mean seed yield 1591 kg/ha was observed from T5 treatment so farmers produced cowpea in the Barisal region 1.5 kg/ha with a blanket dose. The mean seed yield of 2015 and 2016 also showed a similar trend and the highest average yield 1591kg ha-1 was recorded in treatment T5 (20-20-20-10-2-1.5 NPKSZnB kg ha-1).

Yield and yield characters of cowpea as influenced by different doses of nutrients. The plant height did not vary significantly among the treatments at harvest. The highest plant height was observed in T5 (127.13 cm) followed by T4 (119.90 cm) and the lowest was in the control plot (114.46 cm). The maximum pod length was in the treatment T5 (15.06 cm) followed by T4 (14.86 cm), T3 (14.53 cm) and the lowest recorded from in control (14.06 cm). A higher number of pods/plant was recorded in the treatment T5 (20.60) followed by T4 (17.83). The lowest number of pods/plants was produced in control treatment T1 (9.06). Seeds per pod were varied significantly among the treatments T5 (15.86), T4 (13.93) and T3 (13.46). The minimum number of seeds was recorded in the treatment T1 (13.20). The highest 100 seed wt. was observed in treatment T5 (10.76) followed by T4 (10.36) and the least in treatment T1 (10.00) where no nutrients were applied. Seed yield of cowpea varied significantly as influenced by different doses of nutrients.  Treatment T2 (1182 kg ha-1), T3 (1293 kg ha-1) and T4 (1701 kg ha-1) significantly differ in respect of seed yield but the least number of seed yield was observed with T1 (971 kg ha-1) receiving no S i.e. the effect of S is evident. Application of sulphur significantly enhanced the number of pods/plant, number of seed/pod, seed yield. Application of Zn applied in the T4 (1701 kg ha-1) increased significantly higher yield than T2 and T3. Application of zinc increased grain yield of cowpea found by Oseni T. O (2009). Treatment T5 produced the highest seed yield of cowpea (1885 kg ha-1) than all other treatments differing statistically with T5 express the contribution of B on the seed yield of cowpea. Foliar application of boron showed significant influence on the growth and yield of attributes of cowpea. The highest seed yield 1885 kg ha-1 was observed from T5 treatment. Therefore, farmers produced cowpea in the Madaripur region 1.5 kg ha-1 with a blanket dose.
