Preliminary Yield Trial of Blackgram (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The trial was carried out to determine the performance of five blackgram genotypes for yield and yield contributing characters and reaction against disease at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, PRSS Gazipur, RPRS, Madaripur and RARS, Jessore. Significant differences were observed for days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, pod/plant, 100 seed weight, and yield. BBLX-08010-4-1genotype matures earlier than the other genotypes. The highest mean seed yield was recorded in BBLX-08010-4-1 followed by BBLX-08010-2-1. Three genotypes BBLX-08010-4-1, BBLX-08008-2-1 and BBLX-08010-2-1 were selected to evaluate in the next Kharif II season in RYT trial.

Objectives:

As a step of breeding work, after evaluation of genotypes in observation trial, it is necessary to evaluate them in the preliminary yield trial in single or multiple locations to assess their performance at different locations

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of five lines were grown along with check variety BARI Mash-3 in Kharif-II, 2016 at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, PRSS Gazipur, RPRS, Madaripur and RARS, Jessore. It was laid out in an RCB design with three replications and seeds were sown in the field from 23 August to 01 September 2016. Each entry was sown in 4 rows 4 m long plot with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots was 50 cm. Irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. General cultural practices were followed to maintain the experiment. Insecticide and fungicide were not sprayed to encourage the whitefly population to spread the disease. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with check. Ten plants were selected randomly for recording data. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. Data were recorded on days to flowering (DF), days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), pods/plant (PP), seeds/pod (SP), 100 seed weight, YMV and yield (Y) (kg/ha). Data were analyzed statistically by using MSTAT-C and R-program.

Achievement/Findings:

There was a significant variation among the genotypes regarding days to flower, days to maturity, pods per plant, plant height, 100 seed weight and yield in kg/ha. In case of maturity among the location genotypes, BBLX-08010-4-1 was earlier at Ishurdi, Jessore and Gazipur and also showed maximum seed weight (5.82 g) at RPRS Madaripur in contrast with the flowering date 9007 was earlier among the genotypes. The lowest days to maturity were recorded in BBLX-08010-4-1. Among the tested entries, BBLX-08010-4-1 showed the highest number of pods/plant (63.80) followed by 9007, BBLX-08010-4-1, BBLX-08008-2-1 and BARI Mash -3 at Jessore. Considering the mean value of different locations BBLX-08010-4-1 showed a maximum number of pods/plant. Apart from these highest seed weight (4.18 g) was observed in BBLX-08010-4-1followed by BBLX-08008-2-1. From the table 1.4 it was found that the genotypes BBLX-08010-4-1, BBLX-08010-2-1 was the highest mean yield performer over the four locations compared to cheeks. The highest mean yield (1315 kg/ha) was obtained in BBLX-08010-4-1 followed by BBLX-08010-2-1.
