Adaptive Trail of Black Gram Genotypes in High BARInd Tract (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field trial was carried out at the farmer’s field of FSRD site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during Kharif-2 season 2016 to evaluate the high yielding blackgram genotypes in drought-prone area. Six genotypes/varieties of blackgram viz. BBLX-08010-2-1, BBLX-08010-4-1, BBLX-02005-1, BBLX-07002-5, BBLX-07002-1 and BARI Mash-3 were tested in the farmer’s field. Among the tested genotypes/varieties BBLX-02005-1 gave the maximum seed yield (1.39 t ha^-1) followed by BARI Mash-3 (1.30 t ha^-1). The BBLX-07002-1 gave a minimum seed yield (1.17 t ha^-1).

Objectives:

The rainfall in this area is erratic and the lowest for Bangladesh (average 1300-1400 mm per annum). So it is called a drought-prone area in our country. Some crossing materials/lines selected through the screening process by PRC in drought conditions. If these lines grow well with a high yield it will help to develop a new variety.

Methodology:

An experiment on field screening for adaptability of blackgram was conducted at farmer’s field of FSRD site, Kadamshahar, Godagari, Rajshahi during Kharif-2 season 2016. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The unit plot size was 8 rows x 4m. Treatment combinations were randomly assigned in each replication. The land was opened with a power tiller. Later on, ploughing and cross ploughing was done with country plough followed by laddering. Weeds, stubble and crop residues were removed. The land was fertilized with 20-40-20-10 N-P-K-S kg ha^-1 (BARC, 2012) in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively at the time of final land preparation. Blackgram seeds were sown on 29 August 2016. Weeding and thinning were done 20 days after planting black gram seeds. First, weeding was done at the time of first thinning and second weeding and thinning were done at 35 days after planting of blackgram seeds. No irrigation was applied during the experimental period as there was no symptom of moisture stress. To identify any change in plant characters and damage of pests and disease the crop plots were frequently observed. When 80% of the pods turned brown in colour, the crop was assessed to reached at maturity. The plant was harvested on 24 November 2016. The collected data were analyzed statistically using the analysis of variance (ANOVA) for each of the characters under study was done by F (variance) ratio. The seed yield and yield components of chickpea were recorded and analyzed statistically following open-source software R (R Core Team, 2017).

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum days to flowering (44.33) and days to maturity (82.00) were found in BBLX-08010-4-1 and lowest days to flowering (37.66) and days to maturity (79.00) were found in BBLX-07002-5. Maximum plant height (79.97cm) was found in BBLX-07002-1 and minimum (56.81 cm) was found in BBLX-08010-2-1. The maximum number of plants m^-2(39.10), pods plant^-1(42.73), seeds pod^-1(6.40), 1000 seed weight (52.74 g) and seed yield (1.39 t ha^-1) were found in BBLX-02005-1. The minimum number of plants m^-2(35.63), pods plant^-1 (27.40), seeds pod^-1(5.53), 1000 seed weight (49.07 g) and seed yield (1.17 t ha^-1) was found in BBLX-07002-1. Among the genotypes/varieties maximum yield was found in BBLX-02005-1(1.39 t ha^-1) followed BARI Mash-3 (1.30 t ha^-1).

Farmers are happy to get higher yield from the genotype BBLX-02005-1 then BARI Mash-3.

The performance of BBLX-02005-1 was better than tested genotypes/varieties at High Barind Tract. So, genotype BBLX-02005-1 may be recommended for blackgram production in High Barind Tract.
