Regional Adaptive Trials on Blackgram in Saarc Member Countries (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The most promising lines selected from previous years yield trial were grown at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Kharif II 2016 which laid out in RCB design with 3 replications with a view to select promising genotypes. Days to maturity, plant height, disease score and yield were showed significant differences among the genotypes and the rest of the traits showed non- significance among the genotypes. The entry BG-2 flowered and matured earlier than the entry BG-3 followed by BG-7 and BG- 4 matured late. Among the entries highest yield was obtained from BG- 4 followed by BG-7 and BG-2.

Objectives:

With a view to develop such a bridge between each of the member countries, such an experiment on blackgram was programmed with genotypes collected from different SAARC countries through SAARC Agricultural Information Centre (SAIC), Bangladesh.

Methodology:

Four lines were grown along with check variety BARI Mash-3 in Kharif-II season of 2016 at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications and seeds were sown in the field on 01 September 2016. Each entry was sown in 8 rows 4 m long plot with a spacing of 40 cm between rows. Spacing between two plots was 50 cm. Irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. General cultural practices were followed to maintain the experiment except that no insecticide and fungicide were sprayed to encourage the whitefly population to spread the disease. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with check. From each plot, 10 plants were selected randomly to record data. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. Data were recorded also on days to flowering (DF), days to maturity (DM), plant height (PH), pod/plant (PPP), seeds/pod (SPP), 100 seed weight, YMV and yield (Y) (kg/ha). Data were analyzed following STAR computer program. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded. Disease severity was recorded at weekly interval using a 0-5 arbitrary scale (Bashir, 2005)

Achievement/Findings:

Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in all characters except days to flower, pods per plant, seeds per pod and 100 seed weight. The entry BG-2 flowered and matured earlier than the entry BG-3 followed by BG-7 and BG- 4 matured late. Numerically, BG-3 was the tallest and BG-2 was the dwarf among the entries. BG-4 genotype showed high resistance to YMV and BG-2, BG-3 and BG-7 genotypes showed high to moderate resistance to Blackgram Yellow Mosaic Virus. Among the entries highest yield was obtained from BG- 4 (1640kg/ha) followed by BG-7 (1488 kg/ha) and BG-2 (1302 kg/ha). Considering the above characteristics, BG-4 followed by BG-7 and BG-2 was found better in respect of yield and related attributes. These entries will be evaluated over locations to assess their performance, stability and reaction against disease.
