Observation Trial of Lentil (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Fifteen families were grown with check variety BARI Masur 6 and BARI Masur7 in Rabi season of 2016-17 at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna. It was observed that BLX 11014-38 was earlier than others followed by BLX 11014-17 and BLX 11014-20. The maximum pods per plant were found in BLX 11014-11 and the minimum in BLX 11014-38. The highest yield was obtained from BLX 11014-11 followed by BLX 11004-8 compared to checks. Based on yield-related traits eight entries, viz. BLX 11004-8, BLX 11011-7, BLX 11014-8, BLX 11014-10, BLX 11014-11, BLX 11018-4, BLX 11015-3 and BLX 11018-6 were selected for PYT in next year.

Objectives:

After advancement of generation and attaining more than 95% homozygosity, the accessions are evaluated in the replicated observation trial comparing with the standard commercial varieties using as checks.

Methodology:

Fifteen families selected from F₅treated as lines were grown with the check varieties BARI Masur 6 and BARI Masur-7 in Rabi season of 2016-17 at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with two replications and spacing of 40 cm between rows. Each entry was sown in 2 rows of 4m long plots. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and then covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with checks. At maturity, stage genotypes were selected on the basis of earliness, disease reaction and yield. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. Stemphylium blight disease score was counted from the whole plot using (0-10) scale of Hashemi et al. (2005) as 0 = Healthy plant, free of diseases, 1 = Dull leaves or few tiny tan spots, 2 = potentiality, A few small to large chlorotic spots, 3 = Expanding lesions on leaves and leaf drop starting, 4 = 20% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and/or leaf drop, 5 = 40% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and/or leaf drop, 6 = 60% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and/or leaf drop, 7 = 80% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and leaf drop, 8 = 100% leaves dried up/defoliated but small green tip recovering, 9 = 100% leaves dried up/ defoliated including tip but stem still green, and 10 = Whole plant die and completely dried up. The statistical analysis was done using MSTATC computer software.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the genotypes, significant differences were observed in the case of all the yield contributing characters except the plant population. Among the seventeen test entries, BLX 11014-38 flowered and matured earlier than others followed by BLX 11014-17 and BLX 11014-20. BLX 11011-7 was the tallest (48.20 cm) and BLX 11014-20 was the dwarf (34.70 cm) among the genotypes evaluated. The maximum pods per plant were found in BLX 11014-11 and the minimum in BLX 11014-38. Bold size seeds (2.90 g) were obtained from BLX 11014-38 and the entry BLX 11011-7 possessed small-sized seeds. Almost all the test entries showed moderate resistance to stemphylium blight. The highest yield was obtained from BLX 11014-11 followed by BLX 11004-8 compared to checks. Being comparatively high yielder, BLX 11004-8, BLX 11011-7, BLX 11014-8, BLX 11014-10, BLX 11014-11, BLX 11018-4, BLX 11015-3 and BLX 11018-6 were selected from this trial. Considering the yield, yield contributing traits and visual observation finally, 8 entries viz. BLX 11004-8, BLX 11011-7, BLX 11014-8, BLX 11014-10, BLX 11014-11, BLX 11018-4, BLX 11015-3 and BLX 11018-6 were selected to evaluate in PYT in the next Rabi season.
