Evaluation of Early Lentil Germplasm Under Different Row Spacing (2016--2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four promising early entries of lentil were evaluated under three different row spacing (15 cm, 20 cm and 25 cm) at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Rabi 2016-17 with a view to identify suitable row spacing for early lentil lines. Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in the case of most of the yield contributing characters. LRIL 21-109 provided the maximum yield (1332 kg/ha) followed by LRIL 22-215 (1315 kg/ha). Again, the yield (1376 kg/ha) recorded was from 20 cm spacing followed by 25 cm (1264 kg). In the case of Genotype × Spacing interaction, the maximum (1398 kg/ha) yield was recorded from V₂S₂ plot followed by V₄S₂ and V₃S_2. So, for early lines, 20 cm spacing will be the best fit for optimum plant accommodation as well as for higher yield.

Objectives:

This program is designed with a view to select their appropriate row spacing after evaluating the performance of different early lentil genotypes under different row arrangements.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of four promising advanced early genotypes which are semi-erect in nature as well as having good yield potentiality. Those genotypes were arranged in different 3-row spacing arrangements viz.15 cm, 20 cm and 25 cm. The location of the experiment was at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Rabi 2016-17 which laid out in a RCB factorial design with 2 replications where genotypes were used in one factor and spacing was in another factor. Each entry was sown in unit plot of 4 rows × 4 m long with those spacing treatments. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and then covered by soils. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. The statistical analysis was done using MSTATC computer software.

Significant differences were observed among the genotypes’ performance only on plant height and 100 seed weight. Numerically LRIL 21-109 produced the maximum yield (1332 kg/ha) followed by LRIL 22-215. Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in the case of pods per plant, plant population per sq. meter and yield (kg/ha). In the case of 15 cm spacing, more number of plants. More plants were found in the case of 15 cm spaced plots in all the genotypes. Numerically, the tallest plants were found in sparsely planted plots. Pods per plant the maximum (36) recorded were in case of 20 cm spaced plots followed by 25 cm (35). The maximum yield (1398 kg/ha) was obtained from V₂S₂treatment followed by V₄S₂ and V₃S_2. Considering the yield and yield contributing traits with different row spacing all the results, it may be concluded that for early lines 20 cm spacing will be the best row spacing for optimum plant accommodation as well as for the maximum yield. Among the genotypes, LRIL 21-109 and LRIL 22-215 were found best to have better yield potentiality.
