Evaluation of Lentil Germplasm Collected from West Bengal (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ten entries of lentil collected from West Bengal, India with two native popular varieties BARI Masur 6 and BARI Masur 7 were evaluated at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Rabi 2016-17 which laid out in a RCB design with 2 replications with a view to select promising genotypes. Significant differences among the genotypes were observed in the case of all the yield contributing characters except pods per plant. RL-12-179 was the tallest followed by Maitree and BARI Masur-6 was the dwarf among the tested entries. Bold seeded entry was found in BARI Masur-6 followed by RL-12-171 and small-seeded entry was L-4076. Almost all the entries showed moderate resistance to stemphylium blight. Among the entries, the highest yield was obtained from RL-12-178 followed by RL-12-171, KLS-218 and RL-12-181. After considering other attributes, five entries viz. RL-12-178, RL-12-171, KLS-218, RL-12-181 and Maitree were selected.

Objectives:

To evaluate the germplasm of lentil collected from West Bengal

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of twelve entries where ten were collected from West Bengal, India and 2 outstanding varieties of lentil (BARI Masur 6 and BARI Masur 7) used as checks. The location of the experiment was at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during Rabi 2016-17 which laid out in a RCB design with 2 replications. Each entry was sown in unit plot of 2 rows × 4 m long with a spacing of 40×10 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands at 3 cm depth and then covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given to ensure seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. Each of the entries was investigated from seedling to harvest and compared with check. Stemphylium blight disease score was counted from the whole plot using (0-10) scale of Hashemi et al. (2005) as 0 = Healthy plant, free of diseases, 1 = Dull leaves or few tiny tan spots, 2 = A few small to large chlorotic spots, 3 = Expanding lesions on leaves and leaf drop starting, 4 = 20% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and/or leaf drop, 5 = 40% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and/or leaf drop, 6 = 60% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and/or leaf drop, 7 = 80% nodes on main stem showing chlorotic/necrotic symptoms and leaf drop, 8 = 100% leaves dried up/defoliated but small green tip recovering, 9 = 100% leaves dried up/ defoliated including tip but stem still green, and 10 = Whole plant die and completely dried up. Grain yield was calculated from the whole plot. At maturity, the best individual genotypes were selected on the basis of earliness, disease reaction and higher yield. Yield data was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha. The statistical analysis was done using MSTATC computer software.

The entry L-4076 flowered earlier followed by BARI Masur-6 and RL-12-180 matured earlier followed by RL-12-181.
