The experiment was conducted with 71 accessions of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) for estimating the genetic diversity. The maximum variations were observed on flower colour and seed colour. There were five types of flower colour as blue 1.41%, light blue 7.04%, pink 32.39%, light pink 53.52% and white 5.63% accessions. The seed colour was observed five such as brown 18.31%, light brown 4.23%, dark brown 64.79%, greyish brown 9.86% and grey 2.82%. Plant pigmentation showed no anthocyanin 15.49%, low anthocyanin 83.10% and high anthocyanin 1.41%. Semi-erect 5.63%, semi-spreading 39.44% and spreading 54.93% growth habit were observed. All accessions showed multipinnate leaf type, small leaflet size, short pod size and angular-seed shape. The number of leaflets per leaf ranged from 2.32 to 20.38; the number of basal primary branch, 2.33 to 8.33; days to 50% flowering, 77 to 92 days; the number of pods per plant, 6.33 to 58.33; pod length, 3 to 6.33 mm; the number of seed per pod,  1 to 2.20 and 100 seed weight,  8.40 to 19.50 g. The maximum coefficient of variation was obtained from the number of pods per plant 49.60% followed by the number of leaflets per leaf 41.83%, number of basal primary branches (25.56%). The minimum coefficient of variation was recorded for days to 50% flowering 4.51%. Per cent of coefficient of variation indicated the variability among the accessions comparing within the characters.

The experiment was undertaken for identifying the genetic variation among the accessions having their useful traits.

The experiment was conducted on characterization of chickpea germplasm at Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI in Gazipur, from November 2015 to March 2016. Seventy-one (71) accessions were taken for this study. The seeds were sown in line; line to line distance was 40 cm. The recommended doses of manure and fertilizers such as cowdung 5 ton/ha, urea 60, TSP 90, MP 40, and boric acid 12 kg/ha were applied in the experimental field (Mondol et al., 2011). Seventeen observations on qualitative (8) and quantitative (9) characters were recorded as per the IBPGR descriptor (IBPGR, 1993). Range, mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation of quantitative characters were calculated.

Qualitative variations of different characters in chickpea were observed. There were three types of variations were observed for plant pigmentation and growth habit; no anthocyanin 11 accessions (15.49%), low anthocyanin 59 accessions (83.10%) and high anthocyanin 1 accession (1.41%) were found and semi-erect 4 accessions (5.63%), semi-spreading 28 accessions (39.44%) and spreading 39 accessions (54.93%) were observed for growth habit among the 71 accessions. The maximum variations were observed on flower colour and seed colour. There were five types of flower colour such as blue 1 acc. (1.41%), light blue 5 acc. (7.04%), pink 23 acc. (32.39%), light pink 38 acc. (53.52%) and white 4 acc. (5.63%). The seed colour was observed five such as brown 13 acc. (18.31%), light brown 3 acc. (4.23%), dark brown 46 acc. (64.79%), greyish brown 7 acc. (9.86%) and grey 2 acc. (2.82%). All the accessions showed multipinnate leaf type, small leaflet size, short pod size and angular-seed shape. Quantitative variations of 7 characters in chickpea are shown in Table-2. The range value of the number of leaflets/leaf, 2.32 to 20.38; the number of basal primary branches, 2.33 to 8.33; days to 50% flowering, 77 to 92 days; number of pods per plant, 6.33 to 58.33; pod length, 3 to 6.33 mm; the number of seed per pod,  1 to 2.20 and 100 seed weight,  8.40 to 19.50 g. The maximum mean value was obtained days to 50% flowering 82.35 days followed by the number of pods per plant 23.58, 100 seeds weight 12.12 g. The maximum coefficient of variation was obtained for the number of pods per plant (49.60%) followed by the number of leaflets per plant (41.83%), the number of basal primary branches was 25.56%. The minimum coefficient of variation was recorded for days to 50% flowering (4.51%). Percent of coefficient of variation indicated the variability among the accessions comparing within the characters. The genetic variability of 71 accessions of chickpea was estimated by using qualitative and quantitative characters. The number of leaflets per leaf showed the height value 20.38 of BD-6257, the maximum number of basal primary branch 8.33 obtained by BD-6237. The maximum number of pods per peduncle is 58.33 found by BD-6285. Pod length 6.33 mm was the height by BD-6691.  The number of seeds per pod showed a maximum of 2.20 by BD-6269 and the maximum 100 seeds weight obtained was 19.50 by BD-6691. Finally, the seeds are preserved as active and base collections for future utilization.
