An experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during 2015-16 to know the diversity of 27 accessions of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata). Qualitative character variation was found in early plant vigour, plant growth habit, leaf size, leaf pubescence nature, and leaf pubescence density. Globular (74.08%), flattened (7.41%), cylindrical (3.70%), elliptical (3.70%), and elongate form (11.11%)  fruit shape having matt (18.52%), intermediate (44.44%) and glossy (37.04%) fruit skin lustre were observed. Different color variations were exhibited in mature fruit skin color (yellowish-70.37% and orange-29.63%), fruit skin color pattern (uniform-25.93%, mottled-62.96% and striped-11.11%), fruit skin color intensity (intermediate 62.96% and dark-37.04%) and mature flesh color (yellow-44.44% and deep yellow-55.56%). Matt and glossy seed lustre were observed among the accessions. The highest CV was found in fruit length (30%) and the lowest in days to female flowering (2.36%).

The objective of this study was to study the genetic diversity in pumpkin germplasm, to identify salient features that distinguish germplasm from one another and to identify germplasm having useful traits.

 

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during winter 2015-16. Twenty-seven accessions of pumpkin were used in this study. Two seeds were sown in a plastic pot (6 cm in diameter approx.) on 23 November 2015. Pits of 40x 40 x40 cm were prepared 10 days before transplanting the seedlings in the main field. Plant spacing was 2x2 m and unit plot size was 3 x 4 m. The seedlings were transplanted on 13 December 2015. The recommended doses of manure and fertilizers such as 5 ton/ha cow dung, 100 kg N, 48 kg P, 80 kg K, 28 kg S, 3 kg Zn, and 2.1 kg/ha B in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, murate of potash, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid were applied in the experimental field (FRG, 2012). The full doses of cow dung, TSP, MP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid were applied during pit preparation before one week of transplanting. The urea was applied in the four installments as top dressing at 15, 35, 55, and 75 days after transplanting. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to have a good crop. Pheromone trap was used for insect control.  The data was recorded as per the descriptor developed by the Minimal Descriptor of Agri-Horticultural Crops (Srivastava et al., 2001).

Qualitative variations of different characters in pumpkins were observed. Poor (22.22%), good (59.26%), and very good (18.52%) early plant vigour were found among the 27 accessions of pumpkin. Short viny (3.70%), medium viny (40.74%), and long viny (55.56%) plant growth habits were observed. Stem pubescence and tendril were present in all accessions. All the accessions showed coiled type and branched tendril. Serrate type leaf margin with cordate leaf shape was observed in all accessions. Most (85.18%) of the accessions showed medium leaf size and minimum (7.41%) showed small and large leaf size. Soft (55.55%), intermediate (25.93%), and hard (18.52%) leaf pubescence nature along with sparse (3.70%), intermediate (25.93%), and dense (70.37%) leaf pubescence density were exhibited. Monoecious sex type occurred in all accessions. Hard corky peduncle surfaces having smoothly grooved peduncle shapes were observed in all accessions. The nature of the base of the peduncle was flared in all accessions. Globular (74.08%), flattened (7.41%), cylindrical (3.70%), elliptical (3.70%), and elongate form (11.11%) fruit shape was observed. Maximum (70.37%) accessions showed yellowish mature fruit skin color and minimum (29.63%) accessions showed orange color. Uniform (25.93%), mottled (62.96%), and striped (11.11%) fruit skin color patterns with intermediate (62.96%) and dark (37.04%) fruit skin color intensity were observed among the accessions. Fruit skin lustre was observed matt (18.52%), intermediate (44.44%), and glossy (37.04%). Depressed (74.08%), pointed (3.70%), flattened (11.11%), and rounded (11.11%) stem-end fruit shapes were found among the accessions while blossom-end fruit shape showed depressed (66.67%), pointed (14.81%), and rounded (18.52%). Mature flesh color showed yellow (44.44%) and deep yellow (55.56%). Matt (40.74%) and glossy (59.26%) seed lustre were observed among the accessions. The qualitative descriptors for individual accessions are presented in Table 3.

Range, mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation were observed. The highest petiole length was exhibited in BD-239 (16.86 cm) while the lowest 11.32 cm was observed in BD-210. Node number at which the first female flower appears ranged from 12 (BD-225) to 23 (BD-220) with an average of 17.66. The germplasm produced the first female flower on 53 days (BD-214) to 59 days (BD-234, BD-242). Peduncle length ranged from 7.54 to 9.8 cm. The germplasm exhibited 1.9 (BD-204) to 4.2 (BD-218) cm flesh thickness in the population. Fruit length ranged from 10.5 (BD-235) to 27.3 (BD-218) cm. On average, fruit breadth was 17.29 cm. 100 seed weight ranged from 5.5 to 16.8 g. The highest CV was found in fruit length (30%) and the lowest CV was found in days to female flowering (2.36%). The quantitative descriptors for individual accessions were recorded.
