Twenty-one accessions of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), BARI, Gazipur during summer, 2015. Variability showed in different fruit characters at the edible stage i.e stem end fruit shape and blossom end fruit shape. Fruit shape was oblong, oval, ellipsoid and blossom end tapered among the accessions. Light green and yellowish-green fruit skin colour were found at the edible stage, whereas brown and yellow fruit skin colour at the mature stage was found in all accessions. The edible fruit stage ranged from 73 to 85 days. The average fruit length and fruit widths were 20.33 and 6.47 cm, respectively. The number of fruits per plant was ranged from 3.5 to 7.5. The highest coefficient of variation was found in fruit length (19.85 %) followed by the number of fruits per plant (18.71%) and the lowest in hundred seed weight (4.71%).

An understanding of the nature and magnitude of the variability among the genetic stocks of cucumber is of prime importance for the breeder. The present study was undertaken to assess the characteristics of cucumber accessions

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre  Farm, BARI, Gazipur during the period from April to August 2015. Twenty-six accessions of cucumber were included in this study. The materials were collected from different parts of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in a non replicated design. One accession represented one treatment, with two plants. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2 m maintaining 0.5 m between the plots. Treatments were randomly assigned to different plots of each block separately. After final land preparation, the bed was raised about 10 cm from the ground level. The cucumber seeds of different accessions dibbled in the pot on 28 March 2015. The seedlings were transferred to the field on 23 April 2015. Necessary intercultural operations were done throughout the cropping season for proper growth and development of the plant. The trail was made with bamboo and plastic wire for the proper growth and development of the cucumber plants. Harvesting of mature fruits started in July 2015 and was continued up to August 2015. Data was collected on qualitative and quantitative characters following descriptor and data were analyzed to find out the variable characters among associations of Cucumber.

Plant growth was indeterminate type and tendril was present in all studied accessions. Medium green coloured leaves were present in maximum (19) accessions, whereas light green coloured leaves were shown in two accessions. Stem end fruit shape was obtuse in most accessions (11) followed by acute (9) and only BD-4313 accession showed necked stem end fruit shape. Blossom end fruit shape was two types i.g deep raised and flat. Flat blossom end fruit shape was found in the maximum number of accessions (15) and minimum accessions (6) had deep raised blossom end fruit shape. Fruit skin texture at the edible stage was smooth (21) in all accessions. The maximum number of accessions (16) showed oblong fruit shape while ellipsoid (3), oval (1) and blossom end tapered (1) fruit shape was also found among the accessions. Fruit skin colour at the edible stage was light green (16) followed by greenish-yellow (5). Maximum fruit skin colour at the fully ripening stage was brown (18) followed by yellow (3).

Range, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variations were observed. Days to staminate and pistillate flower ranged from 48 to 66 days and 56 to 73 days, respectively. The accessions BD-4235 and BD- 4309 takes more duration to produce the staminate and pistillate flower. Days to fruit at the edible stage from 73 to 85 days. On average, internode length, leaf blade length and leaf blade width were 7.81, 14.57 and 17.79 cm, respectively. Average fruit length and fruit widths were 20.33 and 6.47 cm. The highest fruit length was recorded from BD-4242 (30.74 cm) followed by BD-4240 (29.06) and BD 4322 (27.16 cm). The lowest fruit length was obtained from BD-4267 (15.66 cm). The highest fruit width was recorded from BD- 4242 (8.42 cm) followed by BD-4240 (8.12 cm) and the lowest fruit width was obtained from BD-4263 (5.08 cm). The number of fruit per plant at the edible stage was ranged from 3.5 to 7.5. The maximum number of fruits per plant was obtained from BD-4247 and the minimum number of fruits per plant was recorded from BD-4237. 100-seed weight ranged from 2.96 to 3.48 g. The highest coefficient of variation was found in fruit length (19.85 %) followed by the number of fruits per plant (18.71%) and fruit width (14.46%). The coefficient of variation was also high in internode length (16.01). 100 seed weight showed the lowest (4.71 %) coefficient of variation.  Twenty-one cucumber accessions were collected from different parts of Bangladesh, which represent the diverse genetic resources and were evaluated morphologically. Variability showed in stem end fruit shape, blossom end fruit shape, fruit shape, fruit skin colour both at an edible and mature stage. The difference also found in quantitative characters is the days to produce a staminate flower, pistillate flower, mature fruit harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit length and fruit width etc.
