An experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during 2014-15 to know the diversity of 29 germplasm of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.). Among the germplasm “uchche” (65.5%) and “korolla" (34.5%) were identified. Qualitative character variation was found in early plant vigour, plant growth habit, twining tendency, tendril branching, leaf size, and peduncle separation from fruit. Elliptical (55%),oblong (4%), long cylindrical (10%), top-shaped (7%)  and globular (24%) fruit shape having light (17%) and deep tubercle (83%) fruit surface was exhibited. Matt (62%), intermediate (31%), and glossy (7%) fruit skin lustre were observed. Different color variations were exhibited in fruit such as green (76%) and dark green (24%). Low (14%), medium (27%), and high (59%) seediness were found among the germplasm. A good range of variations was observed in fruit length (2.62 to 12.4 cm) and width (1.14 to 9.78 cm). The highest CV was found in fruit width (63.78%) and the lowest CV was found in 100 seed weight (14.57%).

  Bitter gourd

The objective of this study was to study the genetic diversity in bitter gourd germplasm, to identify salient features that distinguish germplasm from one another and to identify germplasm having useful traits.

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur during the summer of 2014-15. Twenty-nine germplasm of bitter gourd was used in this study. Two seeds were sown in a plastic pot (6 cm in diameter approx.) on 23 April 2015. Pits of 40x 40 x40 cm were prepared 10 days before transplanting the seedlings in the main field. Plant spacing was 2x2 m and unit plot size was 3 x 4 m with two replications. The seedlings were transplanted on 19 May 2015. The plants were given the support of a 2 m height bamboo stick. Four plants were used for each germplasm. The recommended doses of manure and fertilizers such as 5 ton/ha cow dung, 100 kg N, 40 kg P, 60 kg K, 20 kg S and 1.5 kg/ha B in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, murate of potash, gypsum and boric acid were applied in the experimental field (FRG, 2012). The full doses of cow dung, TSP, MP, gypsum, and boric acid were applied during pit preparation before one week of transplanting. The urea was applied in the three installments as side-dressing at 20, 40 and 60 days after transplanting. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to have a good crop. Pheromone trap was used for controlling insects. Data were recorded as per NBPGR (2001) descriptors for bitter gourd.

Qualitative characters of different germplasm of bitter gourd were observed. All germplasm were classified as uchche and korolla. Among them, 65.5% germplasm was identified as uchche and the rest 34.5% germplasm were korolla. Poor (24%), good (38%) and very good (38%) early plant vigour were observed among the germplasm. Short viny (3%), medium viny (38%) and long viny (59%) plant growth habits were found. Stem pubescence was present in all germplasm. Twining tendency was none (3%), slight (3%), intermediate (35%) and pronounced (59%). Maximum (90%) germplasm showed unified and minimum (10%) germplasm showed bifid tendril branching. All germplasm showed multifid leaf margin and orbicular leaf shape. Small (17%), medium (55%) and large (28%) leaf sizes were found among the germplasm. Leaf pubescence was absent in all the germplasm. Monoecious sex type was found in all germplasm. All germplasm showed yellow flower color. Peduncle separation from the fruit was easy (34%), intermediate (21%) and difficult (45%). Elliptical (55%), oblong (4%), long cylindrical (10%), top-shaped (7%) and globular (24%) fruit shape along with light tubercle (17%) and deep tubercle (83%) fruit surface occurred among the germplasm. The nature of tubercles was observed as medium (48%) and dense (52%). Blunt (31%) and acute (69%) blossom-end fruit shapes were found. Fruit skin color such as green (76%) and dark green (24%) was exhibited among the germplasm. Fruit skin lustre showed matt (62%), intermediate (31%) and glossy (7%). Low (14%), medium (27%) and high (59%) seediness occurred among the germplasm. The qualitative descriptors for individual germplasm are presented in table 3.

Range, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation are shown in Table 2. Internode length ranged from 2.34 to 6.78 cm. On average, petiole length was 4.21cm. Days to female flowering ranged from 41 to 88 days. Peduncle length ranged from 1.76 to 5.44 cm. Fruit length ranged from 2.62 to 12.4 cm. Fruit width ranged from 1.14 to 9.78 cm. On average, the number of seeds per fruit was 10. 100-seed weight ranged from 10.8 to 20 g. The highest CV was found in fruit width (63.78%) and the lowest CV was found in 100 seed weight (14.57%).
