Characterization of Okra Germplasm (2015--2016)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty eight accessions of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) showed variations in both qualitative and quantitative characters. In case of qualitative characters, all the accessions of okra showed variations in the characters except growth habit, leaf color, petal color, and fruit color at table use. These characters showed no morphological variations among the accessions i.e., all the accessions showed erect growth habit, green with red veins leaf color, yellow petal color, and green fruit color at table use. The highest variability was observed in fruit shape, leaf shape, fruit shape, and fruit pubescence at table use. All the okra germplasm also showed quantitative variations in the characters. The highest CV% was recorded from plant height (33.13) and the lowest was recorded from days to flowering (8.10). The remaining characters also showed high CV% which indicated that there were much variations present in the germplasm.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to characterize the pattern of genetic variability. It would also be helpful for plant breeders to select readily varied parents which will add a new germplasm base for the okra breeding program in the future.

Methodology:

Twenty-eight (28) germplasm of okra was characterized during the Kharif season of 2014-15 at PGRC, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The seeds were sown on 14 April 2015 in the experimental field. The seed of each germplasm was planted in a 3 x 3m prepared plot. Line to line 50 cm and plant to plant 50 cm spacing were maintained. Recommended fertilizer dose and cultural practices were followed. Both qualitative and quantitative characters were recorded as per AVRDC descriptors

All the germplasm of okra showed morphological variations in the characters except growth habit, leaf color, petal color, and fruit color. These characters showed no morphological variations i.e., all the germplasm showed erect growth habit, green with red veins leaf color, yellow petal color, and green fruit color at table use. The highest variability was observed in leaf shape, fruit shape, and fruit pubescence at table use. In fruit pubescence at table use, downy-3, slightly-24, and prickly-1 were found. Variations were also found among the germplasm in branching, stem pubescence, stem color, fruit position, and seed shape. Two types of branching such as moderately branched-3 and profusely branched-25 were found. In stem pubescence, slight-25 and conspicuous-3 were found. Green-25 and green with red patches-3 were found in stem color. Two types of fruit position viz., erect-3 and horizontal-25 were found. Round-19 and reniform-9 types of seed shape were also found in the germplasm.

Range, mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation were recorded. All the quantitative characters showed variations among the accessions. Days to germination ranged from 4 to 9 days. Days to 1^st flowering ranged from 29 to 37 days. In the case of fruit, length ranged from 8.82 to 18.00 cm and fruit width ranged from 1.56 to 3.34 cm. The number of ridges per fruit ranged from 5 to 8 and the number of internodes per plant ranged from 10 to 24 were recorded. The characters such as plant height ranged from 31.60 to 110.50 cm, the number of fruits per plant ranged from 5 to 17, and fruit weight ranged from 10.13 to 27.34 gm were recorded among the germplasm. In the case of the number of seeds per fruit ranged from 24 to 79 and 100-seed weight ranged from 3.28 to 6.57 gm were also observed. The highest CV% was recorded from plant height (33.13) and the lowest was recorded from days to 1^st flowering (8.10). The remaining characters also showed high CV% which indicated that there were many variations present in the germplasm.
