Exploration and Collection of Chilli, Cucumber and Melon Germplasm (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An exploration and collection programme was conducted on chilli (Capsicum frutescens), cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and melon (Cucumis melo) germplasm in 17 Upazilas of 6 districts in Bangladesh during 2016-17. Eighty-seven germplasm of three crops (chilli-21, cucumber-35 and melon-31) were collected from 17 Upazilas of Chandpur, Comilla, Jamalpur, Khagrachari, Mymensingh, and Netrokona districts. The germplasm was collected from farmers’ fields, threshing floors, gardens, farms stores, markets etc. The status of the sample was mostly landraces. The samples were collected as seeds, seedlings, fruits from individual plants or populations. Passport data like crop name, collector’s number, local/ cultivar name, sample status and source, date of collection, name of the village, union, Upazila and district were recorded. The samples were registered and conserving in active collection.

Objectives:

With a view to collect and conserve the available diversity, “Collection, Characterization and Promotion of Chilli, Cucumber and Melon in Bangladesh” has been proposed.

Methodology:

Three expeditions were made for the collection of chilli, cucumber, and melon germplasm from 6 districts of Bangladesh. Each expedition was conducted for 3 to 5 days. The teams were equipped with plastic cartons, GPS, compass, digital camera, hand lens, envelop, knife, scissors, drying sheet, pencil, stapler, etc. Germplasm of target crops was collected from farmers’ fields, farm stores, threshing floor, and market especially from floating seed traders. Germplasm was located with the help of Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer (DAE) and ARS, RARS, OFRD of BARI assisted in locating germplasm. The collector’s number and date were recorded during collection. Name of crop species along with English, Bangla, local, and cultivar names was recorded. Name of donor with an ethnic group, village, union, Upazila, district, latitude, and longitude was noted. The samples were registered and conserved in a medium-term conservation unit following the appropriate procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

Twenty-one chilli, 35 cucumbers and 31 melons were collected from 17 upazilas of 6 districts in Bangladesh under the AFACI-IMPGR project during 2016-17. The highest total number of chilli, cucumber, and melon germplasm (29) was collected from Mymensingh followed by Comilla (18) and Chandpur (14). There are several types of cucumber-like shosha, khira and marpha. Commercial cultivation of melon is concentrated in different pocket areas especially Charland of the country. It got different local names like Bangi, Futi/Fut, Chinal, Gormi and Honey Dew/Cindra depending on the shape, size and flesh texture. Maximum melon germplasm was collected from Mymensingh (13) followed by Chandpur (6). Districtwise collection status of target crops including the number of upazilas explored per district shown in Table 1. Detail passport data of individual germplasm viz. Collector’s number, cultivar/local name, sample status, sample source, date of collection, name village, upazilla and district were recorded during collection
