The study was conducted at Regional Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during Kharif- I season of 2016-17 to study the variability of brinjal germplasm. The experiment involved seventy-eight brinjal germplasm. Variations among brinjal germplasm were observed in different qualitative characters. Plant growth habit was upright for 58 germplasm (74%), intermediate (23%) and prostate (3%). Plant height was found very short, short, intermediate and tall. Maximum plant breadth was observed very narrow (most of the germplasm) others found in narrow and intermediate. In the case of leaf blade length, 26% germplasm were short, 36% intermediate and 38% long were found. Leaf bade lobing was found weak, intermediate to strong and very strong, very acute to obtuse in leaf blade tip angle was observed. Variations were found in leaf prickles and leaf hair. Among the germplasm different corolla colour was observed like pale violet, light violet and bluish violet. Leaf-blade lobing was weak (4%), intermediate (29%) and strong (46%) and very strong (21%). Maximum germplasm was found in intermediate and long for fruit length. Fruit breath was small (6%), intermediate (14%), large (77%) and others were very large. Fruit curvature was straight (86%), slightly curved (6%), and curved (3%) and snake-shaped (5%).  Fruit colour was green (47%), milk-white (17%), scarlet red (4%), purple (19%) and black (13%).

 The experiment was undertaken to study the genetic diversity, identify salient features that distinguish germplasm from one another, and identify the germplasm having useful traits.

The experiment was conducted at Regional Plant Genetic Resources Center, RARS, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2016-17. The experiment involves seventy-eight brinjal germplasm.  The main field was prepared 10 days before transplanting the seedlings. The recommended doses of manure and fertilizers such as 5 ton/ha cow dung, 120  kg N, 36 kg P, 90 Kg K, 15 kg S, and 2.0.kg/ha Zn in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, murate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate (monohydrate), respectively were applied in the experimental field (FRG, 2012). The full doses of cowdung, TSP, gypsum and zinc sulphate were applied during land preparation before one week of transplanting. Urea and MP were applied in the three equal splits at 21,35 and 50 days after transplanting as ring method around the plant followed by irrigation (10-15) days interval during the dry season. The experiment was conducted in a non replicated design. The unit plot size was 3 X 2 m and 9 plants were accommodated in a plot with a plant spacing of 75 cm apart and row to row distance of 100 cm (excluding 50 cm drain). The seedlings were transplanted on 26 February 2017. The plants were given the support of 1 m height bamboo sticks. Admire (0.5 ml per litre) was applied for controlling aphids. Fifteen qualitative characteristics were collected as per Descriptors for Eggplant (IBPGR, 1990).

Maximum germplasm was found in intermediate and long for fruit length. Fruit breath was small 5 germplasm (6%), intermediate 11 germplasm (14%), large 60 germplasm (77%) and others were very large. Fruit curvature was straight for 67 germplasm (86%), slightly curved for 5 germplasm (6%), and curved for 2 germplasm (3%) and snake-shaped for 4 germplasm (5%).  Fruit colour was green for 37 germplasm (47%), milk-white for 13 germplasm (17%), scarlet red for 3 germplasm (4%), purple for 15 germplasm (19%) and black for 10 germplasm (13%). Variations among brinjal germplasm were observed in different qualitative characteristics. Upright, intermediate to prostrate plant growth was observed. Leaf bade lobing was found weak, intermediate to strong and very acute, acute to intermediate in leaf blade tip angle were observed. Variations were found in the number of prickles and leaf hair. Among the germplasm different corolla colour were observed like pale violet, light violet and bluish violet.
