Characterization of Okra Germplasm at Khagrachari (2016--2017)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Hill Agricultural Research Station, BARI, Khagrachari to characterize okra (Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench) accessions. Forty-two accessions of okra showed variation in branching. All the accessions showed erect growth habit, green stem, green with red veins leaf color, and green with red patches petal color. Days to germination and first flowering ranged from 4 to 10 days and 32 to 40 days, respectively.

Objectives:

The experiment was undertaken to study the genetic diversity, identify salient features and identify the accessions having useful traits.

Methodology:

Seeds of 42 okra germplasm were sown in this experiment plots on 4 May 2017 at 50 cm line to line and 40 cm plant to plant spacing. Recommended doses of manures, fertilizers and other intercultural operations were done. Both qualitative and quantitative data were recorded as per minimal descriptor of agri-horticultural crops (Part I) (Mahajan et al., 2000). During the period of experiment 76.8% to 83.7% relative humidity; 333.3 mm to 679.9 mm rainfall; 32.18°C to 34.5°C the average maximum and 19.3°C to 22.43°C the average minimum temperature were recorded. The soil pH value was 4.58.

Qualitative variations of 42 okra germplasm for different characters were recorded. All the accessions showed erect growth habit, green stem, green with red veins leaf color, and green with red patches petal color. The highest variation was observed in branching. Unbranched, moderately branched, and profusely branched plants were found. The accessions BD-9463, BD-9468, BD-9470, BD-9479 BD-9483, BD-9497’ BD-9587 were profusely branched. Days to germination and first flowering ranged from 4 to 10 days and 32 to 40 days, respectively
