Characterization of Muskmelon Germplasm (summer-2015-16)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out with 131 germplasm of muskmelon (Cucimis melo L.) at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur from February to June 2016. The germplasm was collected from different districts of Bangladesh. Globular (31%), oblate (31), flattened (18%), elongated (8%), elliptical (6%) and ovate (5%) fruit shape with absent (12%), superficial (43%), intermediate (14%) and deep (31%) fruit ribs were found among the muskmelon germplasm. Light green to dark green fruit skin colour was observed at the marketable stage. The skin hardness of the fruit was soft, intermediate, and hard. The muskmelon exhibited smooth and spongy flesh texture along with white (62%), orange (33%), and green (5%) flesh colour. All the germplasm were exhibited very well in early plant vigor, long viny plant growth habit, absent stem pubescence, angular stem shape, coiled and unbranched tendril. Fruit length, fruit breadth, and flesh thickness ranged from 9.67 to 32.70 cm, 4.45 to 14.64 cm and 11 to 34 mm, respectively. The number of ribs on fruit ranged from 3 to 14 and fruit weight ranged from 0.28 to 2.9 kg. The highest coefficient of variations was found in fruit weight (49.33) and the lowest in flesh thickness (20.98%). Some promising germplasm was identified.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken with a view to study the genetic diversity, identify salient features that distinguish germplasm from one another and identify germplasm having useful traits.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out with 131 germplasm of muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur from April to June 2016. The germplasm was collected from different districts in Bangladesh. The seeds were planted in a plastic pot on 2nd February 2016. Twenty-three days older seedlings were transplanted in the prepared pit. Pit to pit distance was 4m. Two hundred g TSP, 120g MP, 58g gypsum, 6.30g zinc sulphate, and 6.69g boron were applied in each pit. Five g urea were used as basal doses and then 15 g were applied as a top dressing after seedling establishment. Normal cultivation techniques and intercultural operations were followed to grow a successful crop. The plants were grown on the ground. Observations were recorded on 12 qualitative and 5 quantitative traits as per Minimal Descriptors of Agri-Horticultural Crops. Part II: Vegetable Crops, muskmelon (Srivastava et al. 2001). Mean data on five plants were used for statistical analysis.

All the germplasm were exhibited very well in early plant vigor, long viny plant growth habit, absent stem pubescence, angular stem shape, coiled and unbranched tendril. Globular (31%), oblate (31%), flattened (18%), elongated (8%), elliptical (6%) and ovate (5%) fruit shape with absent (12%), superficial (43%), intermediate (14%) and deep (31%) fruit ribs were found among the germplasm. Light green (62%), dark green (28%), and intermediate green (14%) fruit skin colour were observed. Skin hardness of fruit was soft (32%), intermediate (6%) and hard (62%). Flesh texture was smooth (81%) and soft (19%). White (62%), orange (33%), and green (5%) flesh colour were found among the muskmelon germplasm.

Range, mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation in muskmelon were recorded. Fruit length, fruit breadth, and flesh thickness ranged from 9.62 to 32.70 cm, 4.45 to 14.64 cm, and 11 to 34 mm, respectively. The number of ribs on fruit was ranged from 3 to 14. Fruit weight varied from 0.30 to 2.9 kg. The highest coefficient of variations was found in fruit weight (49.33%) and the lowest in flesh thickness (20.98%). On the basis of different qualitative characters, the accessions BD-11314, BD-11317, BD-11323, BD-11334, BD-11335, BD-11366, and BD-11372 may be selected for further study. Wide variations were found among the qualitative and quantitative characters in muskmelon. The sufficient seeds are kept in conservation for future use.
