Thirty-seven germplasm of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), BARI, Gazipur during summer, 2016. The germplasm was collected from different areas of Bangladesh. In qualitative character, Stem colour was light green, dark green and stem pubescence density was medium and dense among the accessions.   Variability also showed in different fruit characters i.e stem end fruit shape, fruit shape, fruit skin colour at the edible mature stage. Light green and yellowish-green fruit skin colour were at the edible stage. Whereas brown and yellow fruit skin colour at mature stage found in all accessions. Days to staminate and pistillate flower ranged from 35 to 45 and 43 to 54 days, respectively. The average fruit length and fruit width was 17.86 cm and 7.46 cm, the number of fruit per plant was ranged from 3 to 11. The maximum number of fruit per plant was obtained from AC-201 and the minimum number of fruits per plant was recorded from AHI-15. The highest coefficient of variation was found in fruit weight at the edible stage (40.85 %) followed by the number of fruits per plant (34.15%) and the lowest in days to mature fruit harvest (4.05).

The present study was undertaken to assess the salient characteristics in cucumber germplasm.

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre experimental field, BARI, Gazipur during the period from April to July 2016. All the cucumber germplasm were collected from different parts of Bangladesh under AFACI IMPGR project. The experiment was laid out in a non replicated design. One accession represented one treatment with two plants. The unit plot size was 3 m x 3 m maintaining 0.5 m between the plots. Treatments were randomly assigned to different plots of each block separately. After final land preparation, the bed was raised about 10 cm from the ground level. The seeds of forty-five cucumber accessions dibbled in the pot on 4 March 2016. Finally, thirty-seven accession seedlings were transferred to the field on 12 April 2016. Fertilizer was applied @ Urea- 90, TSP-80 kg, MP 64, Gypsum- 75, and Boron-3 kg/ ha by following Fertilizer recommendation guide, 2012. One-third of urea and other inorganic fertilizer was applied at final land preparation. About 10 kg cowdung was applied to the pit after pit preparation. The rest amount of urea was applied in two split-dose after planting. Weeding, irrigation, and other intercultural operations were done throughout the cropping season for proper growth and development of the plant. The trail was made with bamboo and plastic wire for the proper growth and development of the cucumber plants.  Harvesting of mature fruits started from June to August 2016. Data was collected on qualitative and quantitative characters following descriptor (Minimum descriptors for Cucurbita spp., ECPRG, 2008) and data were analyzed to find out the variable characters among associations of Cucumber.

Plant growth was indeterminate type and tendril was present among all studied germplasm. The stem colour was light green in maximum accessions (36) while that was dark green in one accession. Stem pubescence density was divided into three groups: absent, medium and dense. Medium pubescence density was observed in most of the accessions (33 germplasm) followed by the densely pubescent stem (4 accessions). Light green leaves were present in maximum (20) germplasm, whereas medium green coloured leaves were showed in the rest of the germplasm (17) There was no variation found regarding leaf-shaped (orbicular) and leaf margin (undulate).  Stem end fruit shape was obtuse in most germplasm (26) followed by acute (11). Blossom end fruit shape was two types i.e deep raised and flat. A flat blossom end fruit shape was found among the germplasm. Fruit skin texture at the edible stage was few and little spiny in all germplasm (37) but fruit skin luster was dull in twenty-nine germplasm while that was shiny in eight germplasm. The maximum number of germplasm (36) showed oblong fruit shape while ellipsoid (1 germplasm) fruit shape was also found among the germplasm. Fruit skin colour at the edible stage was light green (31 germplasm) followed by yellowish-green (5) and dark green (1). Maximum fruit skin colour at the fully ripening stage was brown (35) followed by yellow (2) among the germplasm.

Range, mean, standard deviation, and coefficient of variations were recorded. Days to staminate flower and pistillate flower ranged from 36 to 45 days and 43 to 54 days, respectively. The germplasm AC-199 takes more duration to produce the staminate and pistillate flowers. The number of days to fruit at the edible stage ranged from 66 to 78 days after transplanting. On average, internode length, leaf blade length and leaf blade width were 8.04, 14.99 and 18.58cm, respectively. Average fruit length and fruit widths were 17.86 and 7.64 cm, respectively. The highest fruit length was recorded from AC-145 (30.68 cm) followed by AMA- 354 (24.8 cm) and AMA-413 (23.96 cm). The smallest fruit was obtained from AHI-15 (7.06 cm). The highest fruit width was recorded from AC-14 (10.24 cm) followed by AC-184 (10.2 cm) and the lowest fruit width was obtained from AHI-78 (5.2 cm). The number of fruit per plant is from 3 to 11. The maximum number of fruits per plant was obtained from AC-201(11 fruits/plant) followed by AC-379 (10) and the minimum number of fruits per plant was recorded from AHI-15. 100- seed weight ranged from 2.01 to 3.78 g. Edible fruit weight ranged from 159.4 g to 766 g. The highest fruit weight was obtained from AC-183 (766 g) and AC-145 (712 g). The highest coefficient of variation was found in fruit weight at the edible stage (40.85 %) followed by the number of fruit per plant (34.15 %) and fruit length (26.51 %). and the lowest in days to mature fruit harvest (4.05).
