Characterization of Chilli Germplasm in Winter (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 65 germplasm of chilli (Capsicum spp.) in the experimental field at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during winter 2017-18 to find out the variability in the germplasm. Qualitative characters showed distinct variation among the germplasm except for hypocotyle colour, nodal anthocyanin, calyx margin shape and calyx annular constriction. Four categories of leaf colour were observed such as green (87.69%), dark green (9.23%) purple (1.54%) and variegated (1.54%). The immature fruit colour was also found in four categories such as green (26.15%), deep purple (3.08%), green with blackish blush (69.23%) and whitish-green (1.54%). Quantitatively highest variation was observed in fruit weight (CV-84.10%)followed by the number of fruits per plant (CV-68.63%), yield per plant (CV-50.41%) and days to 50% fruiting (CV-48.13) Considering all the characters studied the germplasm AC-9 (87.44 g), IAH-43 (76.20 g), IAH-32 (72.20), IAH-106 (70.00 g) were found as the best yielder.

Objectives:

The present investigation was carried out to characterize indigenous chilli germplasm through qualitative and quantitative traits to provide useful information for plant breeding programs.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, during winter 2017-18. Sixty-five germplasm was used in this experiment. Direct seeding was done in the well-prepared seedbeds on 29^th October 2017. Thirty-five days aged seedlings were transplanted in the prepared pits of the main experimental field. The plot size was 3x2.1 m². Each germplasm was planted in a plot of three rows having five pits. Row to row and plant to plant distance was 70×60 cm. Fertilizer doses were 10 ton/ha cowdung, 210 kg/ha urea, 33 kg/ha TSP, 200 kg/ha MP and 5 kg/ha Borax (Mondal et al., 2011). The full doses of Cow-dung, TSP and Borax were applied during land preparation before one week of transplanting. Urea and MP were applied in the three equal splits at 25, 50 and 75 days after transplanting. Weeding and mulching were done four times at 20 days intervals starting from mid-December. The individual net was used per plot to avoid cross-pollination. Sevin 75 WP @ 0.1 g/pit, Sumithion 60 EC @ 2.5 ml/L and Vertimac 18 EC @ 1.2 ml/L were sprayed for controlling insect and mite, respectively. The data was recorded as per the descriptor developed by IPGRI, 1995.

Achievement/Findings:

A wide variation was observed in the collected chilli germplasm. Most of the qualitative characters showed distinct variation among the germplasm. The maximum variation was observed in leaf colour and fruit colour at the immature stage. Quantitatively highest variation was observed in fruit weight followed by the number of fruits per plant, yield per plant, and days to 50% fruiting. Based on yield per plant the promising germplasm was IAH-32, IAH-43, and AC-9. The present finding shows the great genetic potential of the studied germplasm. The promising germplasm identified during the current study has the potential to be used in future breeding programs for getting productive and quality traits. Moreover, the variability observed in the study could be used in the crop improvement program.
