The experiment was conducted with 65 germplasm of chilli (Capsicum spp.) in the experimental field at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during winter 2017-18 to find out the variability in the germplasm. Out of 65 germplasm, 51 germplasm has already been declined due to natural disasters and unfavorable environmental conditions. only 14 germplasm sustained in the experimental field. The experiment is still running in the field. Some qualitative and quantitative data were recorded for report presentation.

The present piece of work has been planned and designed to evaluate the collected germplasm for the summer season by morphological characterization.

The experiment is being conducted in the experimental field of Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, since February 2018 as a summer crop. Sixty-five germplasm was used in this experiment. Direct seeding was done in the well-prepared seedbeds on 19th February 2018. Thirty days aged seedlings were transplanted in the prepared pits of the main experimental field. The plot size was 3x2.1 m2. Each germplasm was planted in a plot of three rows having five pits. Row to row and plant to plant distance was 70×60 cm. Fertilizer doses were 10 ton/ha Cow-dung, 210 kg/ha Urea, 33 kg/ha TSP, 200 kg/ha MP and 5 kg/ha Borax (Mondal et al., 2011). The full doses of Cow-dung, TSP and Borax were applied during land preparation before one week of transplanting. Urea and MP were applied in the three equal splits at 25, 50 and 75 days after transplanting. Weeding and mulching were done four times at 20 days intervals starting from mid-March. The individual net was used per plot to avoid cross-pollination. Sevin 75 WP @ 0.1 g/pit, Sumithion 60 EC @ 2.5 ml/L and Vertimac 18 EC @ 1.2 ml/L are being sprayed for controlling insect and mite, respectively. The experiment is still running in the field for investigation. Up to 15 June 2018 the available collected data were taken under consideration for the review report preparation. The data were recorded as per the descriptor developed by IPGRI, 1995.

Sixty-five (65) germplasm of chilli was planted for characterization. But after few days some of the germplasm tends to deteriorate its physiological growth due to unfavourable environmental conditions. To date, the plant materials have faced several hailstorms and waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. Out of 65 germplasm, 51 germplasm has already been declined due to natural disasters and unfavourable environmental conditions. However, only 14 germplasm were sustained in the experimental field. Therefore, these fourteen germplasms were considered for characterization in the summer season. The characterization was made through 28 different agro-morphological traits including 23 qualitative and 5 quantitative parameters.

Qualitative characters:  A total of 23 qualitative characters were evaluated to know the variability of the studied chilli germplasm in the summer season. The majority of the characters showed distinct variation among the germplasm except for hypocotyl colour (white), nodal anthocyanin, leaf pubescence density, calyx margin shape (intermediate), calyx annular constriction (absent). The maximum variation was observed in cotyledonous leaf colour, leaf colour, pedicel position at anthesis, stigma position, fruit position and fruit colour at an immature stage. The descriptor name, descriptor state and their occurrence (%) in the studied germplasm are recorded.

Quantitative characters: Range, mean, standard deviation and CV% of the quantitative data of chilli were observed. The highest quantitative variation was observed in days to 50% flowering (CV- 22.38%) and it was followed by plant height (CV 18.89%). quantitative parameters were evaluated. Most of the qualitative characters showed distinct variation among the germplasm except hypocotyl colour, nodal anthocyanin, leaf pubescence density, calyx margin shape and calyx annular constriction. The maximum variation was observed in cotyledonous leaf colour, leaf colour, pedicel position at anthesis, stigma position, fruit position and fruit colour at an immature stage. Quantitatively highest variation was observed in days to 50% flowering which was followed by plant height. The present findings of the study so far made show a great genetic potential of the studied germplasm. Moreover, the variability observed in the current study could be used in the crop improvement program.
