Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Bangladesh endowed with its vast fresh water areas, which includes the great Megna, Padma and Jamuna rivers and their innumerable tributaries, and one of the richest areas in the subcontinent for fresh water fisheries sector. Rivers and canals covers around 5.8% of the total area of the country.Bagrid and Schilbeid catfish are the important species. Among the two families Rita rita and Mystus gulio are abundent inestuaries and the bay. Pangasius pangasius is an important and economically valued fish whcih needs hatchery breeding and recruitment them in natural waters. In view of the aforesaid points, the study has been carried out to domesticate them in captive condition; maturity and gonadal development studies for induced breeding and explore the culture potential. Successful reproduction of fish enable mass fish seed production and facilitate culture potential and ranching them in natural habitat for conservation and recruitment. It also help in 1. Optimization of stocking density for brood rearing of hatchery produced native pangasius (P. pangasius) with surface feeder fish, 2. Optimization of stocking density for brood rearing of hatchery produced native pangasius (P. pangasius) with surface feeder fish like silver carp.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Study on indiscriminate killing of pangas: Indiscriminate killing of immature pangas from the Meghna and other other river is recently a burning issue. A study will be conducted under this project to asses the impact of indiscriminate killing of pangas seed. Data will be collected through In Situ observation in 15 days interval on the availability of pangas fry/fingerlings and indiscriminate killing of pangas by different gear from some preselected points of upper and lower portion of Meghna river Viz. Chandpur Sadar, Haimchor, Chor Voirabi, Ramgati(Laxmipur), Hatia, Barisal, Monpura(Vola) Sureswar(Shoriatpur). Moreover, Sampling data were done in the pre-selected points per month to assess the availability of pangas fry/fingerlings. Survey will be conducted to collect datd about the peak season of Pangas killing, method of fishing, no of fishers involved in pangas fishing. For collection of data mechanized boat will be hired where necessary. Local market will also be surveyed fortnightly to collect data on the marketing of pangas fry/fingerlings to assess the indiscriminate killing of pangas fry/fingerlings.
