Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Ninety germplasm of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) were characterized at Plant Genetic Resources Centre, BARI, Gazipur during summer 2018. All the germplasm was collected from different areas of Bangladesh. Stem colour was light green, medium and dark green; stem pubescence density was dense, medium and sparse among the germplasm. Variability also showed in stem end fruit shape, fruit shape and fruit skin colour at the edible stage and mature stage. Light green, green, yellowish-green, dark green and greenish-yellow fruit skin colour were at the edible stage. Brown and yellow fruit skin colour at the mature stage were found in all germplasm.

Objectives:

The present study was undertaken to study the genetic diversity in Cucumber germplasm and to characterize the accessions

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Plant genetic resources centre experimental field, BARI, Gazipur during the period from April to June 2018. 140 newly collected cucumber germplasm were used in this study. But 102 germplasm were germinated and transplanted in the field. All the cucumber germplasm were collected from different parts of Bangladesh under AFACI IMPGR project. The experiment was laid out in a non replicated design. One germplasm represented one treatment with two plants. The unit plot size was 3 m x 2 m maintaining 0.5 m between the plots. Treatments were randomly assigned to different plots of each block separately. After final land preparation, the bed was raised about 10 cm from the ground level. The seeds of cucumber were sown in the pot on 2 March 2017 and finally, seedlings of 102 germplasm were transplanted in the field on 4 April 2018. Fertilizer was applied @ Urea- 90, TSP-80 kg, MP 64, Gypsum- 75, and Boron-3 kg/ ha by following Fertilizer Recommendation Guide, (2012). One-third of urea and other inorganic fertilizer was applied at final land preparation. About 10 kg cowdung was applied to the pit after pit preparation. The rest amount of urea was applied in two split doses after planting. Weeding, irrigation, and insecticide spraying were done throughout the cropping season for proper growth and development of the plant. Sex pheromone traps were set in the field for controlling fruit fly. Harvesting of mature fruits started on 1^st of June, 2018. Data was collected on qualitative and quantitative characters following descriptor (Minimum descriptors for Cucurbita spp., 2008) and data were analyzed to find out the variable characters among germplasm of Cucumber.

Plant growth was indeterminate type and plant growth habits were intermediate in twining among all studied germplasm. The stem colour was light green in maximum germplasm (57) while green colour in 28 and dark green in 5 germplasm. Medium pubescence density was observed in the maximum germplasm (48 genotypes) followed by dense (39 germplasm) and sparse (3 germplasm). Light green leaves were showed in majority of germplasm (53), whereas medium green (24) and dark green leaves were present in the rest (9) of the germplasm. There were no variations found regarding leaf-shaped (orbicular), leaf margin (undulate) and sex type (monoecious) among the germplasm. Stem end fruit shape was obtuse in most germplasm (62) followed by acute (27) and necked (1). Blossom end fruit shapes were three types i.e deep raised, flat and blossom end tapered. Flat blossom end fruit shape was found in maximum (88) germplasm but only two genotypes showed blossom end tapered. Fruit skin texture at the edible stage was spiny in most of the genotypes followed by the smooth texture and spine colour were black followed by white. Maximum (71) number of germplasm showed oblong fruit shape followed by an oval (9 germplasm), ovate (6 germplasm) and elliptic fruit shape were also found. Fruit skin colour at the edible stage was light green (57) followed by green (20), yellowish-green (6), greenish-yellow (2) and dark green (5). Maximum fruit skin colour at the fully ripening stage was brown (53) then that was yellow in thirty-seven germplasm. Cucumber germplasm was collected from different parts of Bangladesh, which represent the diverse genetic resources and were evaluated morphologically. Variability showed in stem colour, stem pubescence density, leaf colour, fruit skin colour both at edible and mature stage
