Characterization of Lentil Germplasm at Burirhat (2017--2018)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during the Rabi season of 2017-18 to identify the important morphological traits of lentil accession. The experiment involved 100 lentil accessions. Variation was observed in respect of yield per plot among the accessions.

Objectives:

It is necessary to periodically regenerate the lentil germplasm seed accessions so as to maintain optimal seed viability over the long-term seed stock. With these objectives, the experiment was undertaken during rabi season 2017-18.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, RARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season 2017-18. Unit plot size was 3m × 1.8m and seeds were sown in rows with a spacing 60 cm. The seeds were sown on 29 November 2017. The experiment involved hundred lentil accessions. Among them 31 accessions failed to germinate due to continuous rainfall. Fungicide, insecticide and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Data was recorded on yield per plot among the accessions. Grain yield per plot was recorded after harvest according to lentil descriptors from IBPGR and ICARDA (1985).

Achievement/Findings:

The experiment comprised of hundred lentil accessions. Yield per plot of different lentil accessions was analyzed. Yield varied from 70g to 350g per plot, where BD-10727, BD-3815, BD-3930, BD-3898, BD-3965, BD-3885, BD-4117, BD-3959, BD-3924, BD-3920, BD-3909, BD-3901 and BD-4019 were high yielding (300 - 350 g/plot). The highest seed yield (350 g/plot) was recorded from BD-10727 & BD-3815 lentil accessions and the lowest yield (70 g/plot) from BD-4014 lentil accession. Seed yield per plot differed significantly among the entries. The accessions BD-10727, BD-3815, BD-3930, BD-3898, BD-3965, BD-3885, BD-4117, BD-3959, BD-3924, BD-3920, BD-3909, BD-3901, and BD-4019 were high yielding (300 - 350 g/plot) and it may be considered as better accessions. These accessions may be used in the lentil improvement program
