Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), RARS, Jamalpur

Seventy-six (76) accessions of mugbean (Vigna radiata) were characterized at plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), RARS, Jamalpur. Qualitative variations were observed in growth habit, terminal leaflet shape, terminal leaflet length, leaf pubescence, leaf colour, petiole colour, petiole length, raceme position, corolla colour, pod colour at an immature stage, pod colour at a mature stage and leafiness except for growth pattern and calyx colour (No variation was found). In quantitative traits, the highest 100 seed weight was found in accession BD-6934 (6.92g) followed by the characters seed yield per plant in accession BD-6933 (16.82g). Early flowering and early maturity were observed in accessions TRMR-74 (43 days) and BD- 6930 (61.33 days). Maximum number of pods per plant present in accession BD- 6917 (28) followed by the characters number of pod clusters per plant in accession BD-10743 (6), number of branches per plant in accession BD-10739(3.3) and number of seeds per pod in accession BD-6935 (17). The highest plant height is present in accession BD-10734 (68.33 cm) followed by the characters pod length in accession BD-6935 (18.58 cm) and length of branch in accession BD-10736 (51.33 cm). The highest mean, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV %) were observed days to maturity (72.84), Plant height (11.10) and seed yield per plant (45.83).  Unique selection and trait information is available within the population studied which may offer crop improvement

The present investigation, a set of mungbean germplasm was studied for genetic variability, varietal identification and genetic diversity based on qualitative and quantitative traits.

The experiment was carried out with 76 accessions of mungbean germplasm at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC), RARS, Jamalpur during 2017-2018. The seeds are directly sowing in prepared land dated on 12 February 2018. The distance between the line to line and accessions to accession was 30 cm and 50 cm in RCBD design with 3 replication. Measurement was performed on five individual plants of each accession. Optimum cultural practices were followed mungbean production system. Data was recorded in qualitative and quantitative traits as per pulse descriptor on International Board for Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR).

Growth habits such as erect-64 and semi-erect-12 were observed. Deltoid- 46 and Ovate- 30 were exhibited in the character terminal leaflet shape followed by the characters terminal leaflet length such as small-58 and medium- 18; petiole colour such as green- 33 and greenish purple-43; corolla colour in accessions such as light yellow- 69 and deep yellow- 07 and pod colour at a mature stage such as black- 74 and brown- 02. Three types of parameters were showed of leaf colour such as light green- 29, green-32 and dark green-15 followed by the characters petiole length in accessions such as short- 38, medium- 37 and long- 01; raceme position such as mostly above the canopy- 29, intermediate- 46 and no pods visible above the canopy- 01; pod colour at an immature stage such as light green-25, deep green-49 and other-02 and leafiness in accessions such as space-21, medium-47 and abundant-08. All accessions were shown the same parameter in the characters growth pattern and calyx colour. For leaf pubescence such as glabrous-26 and pubescent-03 were showed.

Range, mean, standard deviation (SD) and coefficient of variation (CV %) were recorded.  Early flowering was observed in accession TRMR-74 (43 days) and late flowering BD-6904 (70.67 days) in the character days to 50%flowering. Early maturity is the most important character in pulse crops like mungbean, BD-6930 (61.33 days) was shown in early maturing accession and BD-10737 (84.67 days) was late maturing accession in the character days to maturity. The highest plant height showed in accession BD-10734 (68.33 cm) and lowest BD-6911 (29 cm). The character pod length highest showed in accession BD-6935 (11.58 cm) and lowest BD-6903 and BD-6904 (5.22 cm). The maximum number of pods per plant was observed in accession BD-6917 (28) and minimum BD-6932 (10).  The character number of branches per plant range from 2 (BD-6875, BD-6914 and BD-6915) to 3.33 (BD-6910, BD-6918 and BD-10739). Another character length of the branch was observed lowest in accession BD-6913 (20 cm) and highest in accession BD-10736 (51.33 cm). The highest number of pod clusters per plant was observed in accession BD-10743 (6) and the lowest BD-10504 (2.33). The accession BD-6934 (6.92 g) was shown the maximum weight of 100 dried seeds and a minimum BD-10591(1.93 g). The character number of seeds per pod range from 8.33 (BD-6878 and BD-6903) to 17 (BD-6935). The accession BD-6933 (16.82 g) was showed maximum seed yield per plant and minimum BD-10591(2.86 g). In the case of co-efficient of variation, the highest (45.83) was noted in seed yield per plant. So the high variability is present in the character seed yield per plant. A maximum mean value (72.84) was present in the character days to maturity and the highest standard deviation (SD) was found (11.10) in the character plant height.
