Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Multi-crop exploration and collection programs have been undertaken in 40 upazilas of 19 districts in Bangladesh during 2019-20. Five hundred and sixty-eight (568) germplasm of 65 crops were collected from Bandarban, Bramanbaria, Chottogram, Cox's Bazar, Dhaka, Dinajpur, Jamalpur, Jashore, Jhenaidah, Khagrachari, Khulna, Kushtia, Mymensingh, Natore, Pabna, Panchagarh, Rajshahi, Rangamati and Thakurgaon. The germplasm was 11 cereals, 72 pulses, 19 oilseeds, 388 vegetables, 36 spices, 30 fruits, and 12 other crops. These germplasms were collected from the home garden, field, threshing floor, farm store, cultivated habitat, market etc. The samples were collected as seeds, seedlings, fruits from individual plants or populations. Passport data like collector’s number, local/cultivar name, date of collection, donor’s name, name of the village, union, upazila and district also GPS reading of the locations were recorded. The samples were registered in the germplasm collection register and conserved in active collection following appropriate procedures.

Objectives:

PGRC/BARI is targeted to contribute to achieve the sustainable development goal: End hunger, food security, and improved nutrition through the collection, conservation, evaluation and sustainable utilization of plant genetic resources. Hence, the study was undertaken

Methodology:

Eleven collecting missions were made for the collection of different BARI mandate crops’ germplasm from different regions of Bangladesh. Eleven teams such as F, SN, SR, SQ, NQ, SSR, SAA, NQR, NRI, MRI, and NSQR were formed comprising 1-4 scientists in each team. Each expedition was conducted for 2 to 6 days. District-wise collection sites (Upazilas) were recorded. The number of samples of a crop was depleted on the extent and availability of varieties observed during collection. The teams were equipped with plastic cartons, GPS, compass, digital camera, hand lens, envelop, knife, scissors, drying sheet, pencil, stapler etc. Germplasm of target crops was collected from farmers’ fields/houses/threshing floors and markets especially from floating seed traders (Arora, 1991). Local extension services and scientists of BARI assisted the team in exploring the crops. The collector’s number and date were recorded during collection. Name of crop species along with English, Bangla, local, and cultivar names was recorded. Name of donor with an ethnic group, village, union, upazila/thana, district, latitude, and longitude were noted. Type of soil, topography, sample status, sample source, habitat, frequency, type of materials, cultural practices, season, sole or mixed with, sample type, sampling method, insect and disease, agronomic score, and plant characteristics were documented. Passport Data Form was developed to record passport information. The samples were registered in Germplasm Collection Register after collection and conserved in a medium-term conservation unit following the appropriate procedure.

Achievement/Findings:

A total of 568 germplasm of 65 crops were collected from 40 upazilas of 19 districts. Among them, 11 germplasm from cereals (Foxtail millet and Maize), 72 pulses (Black gram, Chickpea, Grass pea, Lentil, Pea, Pigeon pea and Sorghum), 19 oilseeds (Black cumin, Linseed, Mustard and Sesame), 36 spices (Chilli, Coriander, Fennel, Turmeric and Zinger), 388 vegetables (Aroids, Amaranth, Ash gourd, Babar shak, Bitter gourd, Bogar pata, Bottle gourd, Brinjal, Country bean, Cucumber, French bean, Indian spinach, German turnip, Jute leaf, Kang kong, Lafa shak, Okra, Tok pata, Pumpkin, Radish, Red amaranth, Ridge gourd, Roselle, Snake gourd, Spinach, Sponge gourd, Teasel gourd, Mia shak, Yam and Yard-long bean), 30 fruits (Banana, Guava, Musk melon, Papaya and Watermelon) and 12 other germplasm (Coffee, Easly, Hugibigol, Indigo, Join, Katrang, Latakestori, Medicinal plant, Teffulgula, Tulsi and Withania root).
