Characterization of Soybean Germplasm (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted with 46 germplasm of soybean (Glycine max L.) in the experimental field at Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur, during winter 2017-18 to find out the variability in the germplasm. All the qualitative characters showed distinct variation among the germplasm. The maximum variation was observed in seedling vigour, leaflet shape, seed coat colour, hilum colour, seed coat surface luster. Quantitatively highest variation was observed in days to fruit settings (CV- 67.02%). Time required to first fruit setting ranged from 3.20-30.10 days with an average of 13.59 days. The early fruiting germplasm is BD-7177, BD-2332, BD-2329, TRMR-35, BD-2333, BD-2331 and BD-9024 and the late fruiting germplasm are BD-9420, BD-7175, BD-2334 and BD-2330.

Objectives:

The present study has been carried out to characterize the soybean germplasm in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur, during winter 2017-18. forty-six germplasm was used in this experiment. Direct seeding was done in the well-prepared field on 03 December 2018. Each germplasm is directly sown in the experimental field. Row to row distance was 30-40 cm and plant to plant distance was 5-6 cm. Fertilizer doses were 10 ton ha^-1 Cow-dung, 210 kg ha^-1 Urea, 50-60 kg ha^-1 TSP, 150-175 kg ha-1 MP 100-120 kg, Zypsum 80-115 kg ha^-1 and 8-10 kg ha^-1Borax (Azad et al., 2019). The full doses of Cow-dung, TSP, and Borax were applied during land preparation before one week of transplanting. Urea and MP were applied in the three equal splits at 25, 50, and 75 days after sowing. Weeding and mulching were done when required. Sumithion 60 EC @ 2.5 ml/L and Vertimac 18 EC @ 1.2 ml/L were sprayed for controlling insect and mite, respectively. The data was recorded as per the descriptor developed by IBPGR, 1984 for soybean.

Achievement/Findings:

A wide variation was observed in the collected Soybean germplasm. Most of the qualitative characters showed distinct variation among the germplasm. The maximum variation was observed in seedling vigour, leaflet shape, seed coat colour, hilum colour, and seed coat surface luster. Quantitatively highest variation was observed in the days to fruit set. The present finding shows the great genetic potential of the studied germplasm. The promising germplasm identified during the current study viz BD-2330, BD-2334, BD-7175, and BD-9024 (based on the maximum number of fruits) has the potential to be used in future breeding programs for getting productive and quality traits.
