Characterization of Sesame Germplasm (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Seventy-three germplasm of sesame were evaluated during the Kharif-1 season of 2019-20 at the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of BARI, Gazipur to characterize indigenous sesame germplasm through qualitative and quantitative characters to identify the promising germplasm and provide genetic diversity for the crop improvement program. Some qualitative and quantitative data were recorded. Minor qualitative variation was observed among the germplasm. Higher plant height (148.4 cm) was obtained in AMA-194 germplasm than others. The longer (15.36cm) and broader leaves (3.06cm) were noticed in the AMA-286 collected material. The germplasm MAH-16 was exposed with a higher length (2.78cm) and AMA-365 with higher width (0.74 cm) capsule. The number of seeds/capsules possessed the top position (109.8) in the case of AC-513 germplasm. After completing all the post-harvest operations, the seeds were conserved properly for future use.

Objectives:

The present investigation, a set of sesame germplasm was studied for genetic variability, varietal identification and genetic diversity based on qualitative and quantitative traits.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Plant Genetic Resources Centre (PGRC) of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Gazipur during Kharif-I 2019-20. A total of 73 accessions were used in this experiment. The plot size was 3×2 m². Each germplasm was planted in a plot of three rows. Row to row and plant to plant distance was 30×10 cm. Chemical fertilizers such as Urea 80 kg ha^-1, TSP 130 kg ha^-1 and MP 55 kg ha^-1 were applied (FRG, 2018). The half quantity of Urea and all fertilizers were applied during land preparation. The rest of Urea was top-dressed 30 days after sowing. Optimum cultural practices were followed to regenerate the program properly. During the experiment, a hairy caterpillar as a major insect was noticed. To control them, Malathion was sprayed @ 1.5 ml/liter 3 times at 15 days intervals, and for thrips control Aktara (0.25g/l) and Vertimec (1.2ml/l) were sprayed alternately at 10 days intervals for 2 times. Some qualitative and quantitative observations were recorded. Seeds were dried and cleaned properly for conservation in the gene bank. Seventeen qualitative characteristics were documented as per Descriptors for Eggplant (IBPGR, 1990).

Some qualitative and quantitative data of the collected germplasm of sesame have been recorded. Almost all the germplasm had similar expressions in case of different qualitative parameters such as leaf colour, basal leaf margin, plant growth type, main stem colour, stem shape in cross-section, stem branching, petiole colour and exterior corolla colour. A little bit of variation was observed in some characters as leaf shape, leaf arrangement and stem hairiness. Among the germplasm, AMA-194 obtained a higher plant height (148.4 cm) than others. The longer (15.36cm) and broader leaves (3.06cm) were noticed in the AMA-286 collected material. The germplasm MAH-16 was exposed with a higher length (2.78cm) and AMA-365 with higher width (0.74 cm) capsule. The number of seeds/capsules possessed the top position (109.8) in the case of AC-513 germplasm. Seventy-three collected materials of sesame were regenerated during the Kharif-1 season of 2016-17. As all the germplasm showed less variation in qualitative characters, it would be better if those materials go under molecular analysis to get a unique BD number
