Evaluation of Grasspea Exotic Germplasm (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted for evaluation and seed multiplication of grasspea exotic germplasm during 2019-20 at PRC, Ishwardi, Pabna. A total of 42 genotypes along with one check BARI khesari-5 was evaluated. Variability was found in all the parameters of data. Finally, 19 genotypes were selected for further evaluation in a replicated trial in the next season.

Objectives:

PRC received 200 grasspea germplasm from ACIAR as collaborative research activities to evaluate and seed multiplication of these germplasm and also find out the suitable genotypes for Bangladesh climate

Methodology:

The experiment was sown on 26 November 2019 at PRC, Ishwardi, Pabna in a single row of 4 m long plots with a spacing of 50 cm between rows. This experiment was a non-replicated trial. Seeds were sown carefully by hands about 3 cm depth and then covered by soils. Post sowing irrigation was given for ensuring seed germination. Mulching was done and soil crusts were broken. At the maturity stage, the best genotypes were selected on the basis of disease reaction, insect susceptibility, no of pods, pod size, and plant canopy structures. Grain yield was recorded from the whole plot and converted into kg/ha, other yield contributing data were recorded from ten randomly selected plants.

Achievement/Findings:

Mean performance of yield and yield contributing characters of grasspea exotic germplasm observed. Variable type of genetic material was found in the germplasm set. They varied according to different yield contributing parameters. Days to flowering ranged from 67-75 days and the mean was 72. The days to maturity range was recorded 122-128 days and a mean of 126 days. Plant height range was 68.4 to 98.6 cm and the mean was 82.6 cm. Pods per plant range were 4 to 46 and the mean was recorded 27. 100 seeds weight range was recorded 4.84 to 8.21 g and mean 6.41 g. Yield per hectare range was recorded 136 kg/ha to 1644 kg/ha and mean yield per hectare was recorded 904 kg/ha. The highest yield was obtained from 144995 and the lowest from 116828. Based on the morphological features in the field, yield per plant, 100 seed weight, plant height, and others yield contributing characters a total of 19 genotypes were selected for further evaluation in the replicated trial in the next season and selected genotypes are 114508, X2009-14-12S-24, X2009-24-12S-11, 114509, 116610, 116820, 116655, X2009-11-12S-7, 114585, 66054, 114510, 114505, 116755, 144995, 66065, 116764, 114506, 116678 and116690.
