Participatory Varietal Selection of Mungbean (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Four entries including two check varieties BARI Mung-6 and BARI Mung-8 were evaluated at PRC, Ishwardi; and RPRS, Madaripur in an RCB design with 3 replications to select the lines of lentil for releasing as mungbean variety with the direct involvement of farmers. BMXK1-112002-21, BMXK1-112004-3, BMX-010015, MM-21-V-12, and two check varieties (BARI Mung-7 and BARI Mung-8) were evaluated in the trial. Among these promising BMX-010015, was the best performer in view of yield and farmer’s preferences.

Objectives:

Mungbean is a value-added product. Many people directly or indirectly related to this value-added activity which in turn creating a great opportunity for employment as well as the diversified product.

Methodology:

The experiment consisted of four lines (BMXK1-112002-21, BMXK1-112004-3, BMX-010015, MM-21-V-12, and two check varieties (BARI Mung-7 and BARI Mung-8) which were grown at PRC, Ishwardi; and RPRS, Madaripur to select the genotypes of farmers preference. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 rows of 4m long and spacing was 50 cm × 10 cm. Seeds were sown in the rows carefully by hands and covered by soils on 7th March 2020 at RPRS and 27 March at PRC. All recommended fertilizers were applied as basal dose during final land preparation. One weeding was done 35 days after sowing. The crop was harvested after maturity. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 05 randomly selected plants from each plot. Grain yield (kg/ha) was recorded from the whole plot. Data were analyzed statistically by using R- software.

Achievement/Findings:

There was no remarkable variation among the entries regarding days to flower and days to maturity. Days to flower ranging from 40 -48 whereas days to maturity 60-66. Ishwardi location flowered early and matured early as well. Plant height was found to be significant for both locations. BARI Mung 8 was found to be the shortest one while BMX-010015 is the tallest genotype. Considering mean value over the location the genotype BARI Mung 8 produced the highest number of pods followed by BMXK1-112004-3. Genotype BMXK1-112002-21 found bold seeded across the location while BARI Mung 8 have least 100 seed weight among tested genotype. Considering seed yield BARI Mung 7 yields the highest (907 kg ha^-1) followed by BMX-010015. From this evaluation, it might be concluded that BMX-010015, BMXK1-112004-3, and BMXK1-112002-21 were suitable for high yielding at different locations.
