Effects of Seeding Time on Yield and Yield Component of a Promising Pea Genotypes (bp001) (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field study was carried out at PRSS, BARI, Gazipur during the rabi season of 2019-20 to find out the optimum sowing time for higher growth and yield of pea genotypes (BP001). The experiment was carried out with seven different sowing times e.g. i) 15 November; ii) 20 November; iii) 25 November; iv) 30 November; v) 05 December; vi) 10 December; vii) 15 December under a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results revealed that the yield was higher on 15 November (2722 kg/ha) followed by 20 November and lower on 15 December (556 kg/ha).

Objectives:

This research has been undertaken to find out the optimum sowing time on growth and yield for this promising pea genotypes BP001.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at PRSS, BARI, Gazipur during the rabi season of 2019-20. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The dimensions of the plots were 3 m x 4 m. The experiment consisted of seven sowing times viz. i) 15 November; ii) 20 November; iii) 25 November; iv) 30 November; v) 05 December; vi) 10 December; vii) 15 December. The crop was harvested on 2-18 March 2020. The fertilizers @ 20-20-20 NPK kg/ha were applied during the final land preparation and the seed rate was 80 kg/ha. One hand weeding was done 20 days after sowing (DAS) for controlling the weed. Tafgor @ 2ml/Lwas used one time for controlling aphid at 30 DAS. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield (t/ha) was recorded from the whole plot after harvest. The collected data were analyzed by the statistical software R and the least significant differences were calculated at a 5% level of significance (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The plant height, pods/plant, seed/pod and seed yield was significantly affected by different sowing time of field pea. The duration of flowering varied 61-91 days and maturity varied 107-122 days. The tallest plant (82 cm) was calculated on 15 November and the shortest (61 cm) was observed on 15 December. The branches/plant varied 2.07-2.60. The highest pods/plant (19.80) was obtained from 15 November and the lowest (5.9) on 15 December. Similarly, the number of seeds/ pod was higher on 15 November (3.87) and while the number of seeds/ pod was lower on 15 December (2.44). Hundred seed weight varied 12.53-13.93 g. The yield was higher on 15 November (2722 kg/ha) followed by 20 November and lower on 15 December (556 kg/ha). The highest seed yield was obtained from 15 November which might be attributed to higher pods/plant and seeds/pod. The lowest seed yield was obtained from 15 December. The seed yield was decreased gradually from 20 November to 15 December.
