A field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi during the rabi season of 2018-19 and 2019-2020 to find out the suitable cultivars on the growth and yield of Field pea under relay conditions. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were six cultivars, e.g. BFP 11016, Bagha local, BARI Motor-1, BARI Motor-3, Jikorgacha local, and Sikim local. Among the field pea cultivars, the highest seed yield was obtained from Bagha local (1.1 t/ha) followed by BARI Motor-3 (1.0 t/ha) while the lowest seed yield (0.4 t/ha) was obtained from BFP 11016 in 2018-19. In 2019-20, the highest yield was obtained from BARI Motor-3 which might be attributed to the higher number of pods/plants. However, this was the second-year trial and will be continued for the next two years for a concrete conclusion.

The present study has been undertaken to find out the suitable cultivars of field pea for increasing production by the resource-poor farmers under relay conditions with T.aman rice.

The field experiment was conducted at Pulses Research Centre and Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during the rabi season of 2018-19. The experiment was established on 31 October 2018 and harvested on 4 March 2019. Six cultivars such as BFP 11016, Bagha local, BARI Motor-1, BARI Motor-3, Jikorgacha local, and Sikim local were evaluated for the present experiment in 2018-19.  In 2019-2020, the motor seed was sown on 7 November 2019 and harvested on 11 March 2020. Six cultivars such as BFP 11016, Faridpur local, BARI Motor-1, BARI Motor-3, Jikorgacha local and Sikim local were evaluated for the present experiment in 2018-19. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The dimensions of the plots were 5 m x 4 m. The soil was sandy loam having a pH of 7.5. The fertilizers @ 20-20-20 NPK kg/ha were applied during the final land preparation. The seed was broadcasted in the existing rice field before 15 days of rice harvest and the seed rate was 80 kg/ha. Rice was harvested retaining 40 cm rice straw from the ground level. One hand weeding was done 20 days after sowing (DAS) for controlling the weed. Tafgor @ 2ml/Lwas used one time for controlling aphid at 30 DAS. Data on yield contributing characters were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and grain yield (t/ha) was recorded from the whole plot after harvest. The GenStat 15th Edition software package was used for all statistical analyses. The mean differences between treatments were separated by the least significant difference (LSD) at P≤ 0.05 for the measured variables.

All the yield components such as plant population/m², plant height, branches/plant, pods/plant, seed/pod, pod length and 1000-seed weight and yield were significantly affected by different varieties/germplasm of field pea. BFP 11016 and Jikorgacha local flowered earlier (52.0 and 52.7 days) and Sikim local flowered late (56.7 days). Similarly, BFP 11016 and Jikorgacha local matured early (111.3 and 113.0 days) and Sikim local took maximum days (119.7 days) to mature. The highest number of plant population/m² (36.3) was recorded from Bagha local while the lowest plant population/m² (15.0) was recorded from BFP 11016. The plant of Sikim local was the tallest (119.1) while the plant of BFP 11016 was the shortest (77.3). The branches/plant of Bagha local and BARI Motor-3 (4.0) were higher than that of other cultivars and the lowest branches/plant was recorded from BFP 11016 (1.8). The highest pods/plant (22.7) was obtained from Bagha local and the lowest (5.9) from BFP 11016. However, the number of seeds/ pod was higher in BARI Motor-3 (5.9) and Bagha local (5.7) while the number of seeds/ pod was lower in Sikim local (4.5) and Jikorgacha local (4.7). The pod length was higher in Sikim local (6.5 cm) and in BFP 11016 (5.9 cm). The highest 1000-seed weight was recorded from Sikim local (223.3 g) and the lowest from Bagha local and BARI Motor-1 (63.3). The yield was higher in Bagha local and BARI Motor-3 (1.1 and 1.0 t/ha) followed by Jikorgacha local and BARI Motor-1 (0.8 t/ha) and lower in BFP 11016 (0.4 t/ha). All the yield components such as pods/plant, pod length, 1000-seed weight, and yield were significantly affected by different varieties/germplasm of field pea.  The highest pods/plant (35.3) was obtained from BARI Motor-3 and the lowest (16.0) from BFP 11016. However, the number of seeds/pods was not significantly different due to the different varieties/germplasm of field pea. The pod length of Sikim local, BFP 11016, and BARI Motor-3 (5.5-6.5 cm) were higher as compared to Faridpur local (4.8 cm), BARI Motor-1 (5.0 cm), and Jikorgacha local  (5.0 cm). The highest 1000-seed weight was recorded from Sikim local (273.3 g) and the lowest1000-seed weight was recorded from Faridpur local (86.7 g) and BARI Motor-1 (93.3). The highest yield was obtained from BARI Motor-3 (1650 kg/ha) and Jikorgacha local (1423 kg/ha) while the lowest yield was obtained from Sikim local (1064 kg/ha) and BFP 11016 (1126 kg/ha).
