The field experiment was carried out at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2019-20 to verify the performance of grass pea as a mixed crop with mustard under relay cropping systems with T. aman rice. The treatment combinations used for the experiment were T1: Sole grass pea (100% grass pea @ seed rate 60 Kg ha-1), T2: sole mustard (100% Mustard @ seed rate 7 Kg ha-1), T3:100% grass pea + 5 % mustard, T4: 100% grass pea +10 % mustard, T5: 80% grass pea + 15 % mustard, T6: 80% grass pea + 20 % mustard. The result shows that sole mustard (T2) gave the highest seed yield of mustard and 100% grass pea + 5 % mustard (T3) contributed the minimum seed yield of mustard. On the other hand, the yield and yield attributes of grass pea were not influenced significantly due to mixed cropping with mustard.  Considering the yield and economic analysis, it can be concluded that 80% grass pea + 20 % mustard is more profitable than other treatment combinations.

The present study was undertaken to verify the agronomic and economic performance of mixed cropping of grass pea with mustard under relay cropping systems with T. aman rice.

The experiment was carried out at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2019-20 under AEZ-11. The soils of the experimental plots were clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three dispersed replications. It has consisted with six treatments as follows; T1: Sole grass pea (100% grass pea @ seed rate 60 Kg ha-1), T2: sole mustard (100% Mustard @ seed rate 7 Kg ha-1), T3:100% grass pea + 5 % mustard, T4: 100% grass pea +10 % mustard, T5: 80% grass pea + 15 % mustard, T6: 80% grass pea + 20 % mustard. Seeds of grass pea (BARI Khesari-5) and Mustard (BARI Sarisha-11) were broadcasted on 07 November 2019. The unit plot size was 20 m2 (5m x 4 m). Before sowing of seed, all fertilizers except nitrogen were applied as basal in the standing aman rice at the rate of N20P20K20S10 kg ha-1 respectively in the form of urea, triple superphosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum, respectively (FRG, 2012). Half of the urea was applied as the top dress just after rice harvesting and the rest of urea was top-dressed in the evening after hand weeding. Plant protection measures and all other management practices were done as and when necessary. Mustard was harvested on 25 February 2020, whereas grass pea on 30 March 2020. Data on the different crop parameters were collected from the 5 sample plants and then the average was taken which was further analyzed by computer program ‘R’ and the mean values were adjusted by LSD at 0.05 levels of probability.

Results indicated that plant height, branches plant-1 and pod length of mustard were not significant differences among the treatments. It was revealed that the higher number of pods plant-1 (140) was recorded in T3 (100% grass pea + 5 % mustard) which was statistically identical to T4 (100% grass pea +10 % mustard), T5 (80% grass pea + 15 % mustard) and T6 (80% grass pea + 20 % mustard) and the lowest number of pod plant-1(106) was obtained from T2 (sole mustard). Similarly, thousand seed weight was higher in T3 (3.09) which was statistically similar to T4 (2.99), T5 (2.99), T6 (2.95) and the lowest in T2 (2.61). Seed yield of mustard was maximum (462 kg ha-1) in T2 (sole mustard) and the minimum (161 kg ha-1) was obtained from T3 (100% grass pea + 5 % mustard). The result indicated that yield and yield attributes of grass pea were not influenced due to mixed cropping with mustard. Results revealed that the yield of grass pea was varied from 595 kg ha-1 to 765 kg ha-1. The yield of grass pea did not decrease due to less population of mustard in the mixed cropped situation which might be less competition for nutrients and less light interception between the main and the intercrops. Cost and return data were observed. Gross return, as well as gross margin, was found higher in mixed crop cultivation in comparison to sole cropping. From a cost and return analysis, it was documented that T6 treatment (80% grass pea + 20 % mustard) made the highest gross margin Tk. 19940 ha-1 followed by T4 (Tk. 18060 ha-1). The lowest gross margin and gross margin (Tk. 32340 ha-1 and Tk. 7340 ha-1, respectively) was obtained from sole practices T2 (Sole mustard). Many researchers also documented higher gross margin or net return in mixed /intercropping systems than sole crops. The finding of the research result also supports the findings of Farhad et al. (2014) who concluded that intercropping is more profitable than sole cropping and the risk of cultivation of one crop can be reduced by intercropping or mixed cropping.
