Screening of Pigeon Pea Genotypes for Higher Yield (2019--2020)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during the rabi season of 2019-2020 to find out the suitable genotypes of pigeon pea for higher yield. The experiment involved thirty-one pigeon pea germplasm. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three dispersed replications. Results revealed that the minimum duration of flower (187 days) was observed in Naogaon Local where maximum duration (279.00 days) was found in the BD-3114 genotype. Yield per plant varied from 15 g to 587 g, where Naogaon Local and BD-3121 gave higher yield (587 g and 328 g per plant, respectively), 20 accessions were moderate yield (101-295 g per plant) and the rest 9 accessions were low yield (15−100 g per plant). The lowest seed yield (15 g per plant) from BD-3131 pigeon pea accession.

Objectives:

This experiment has been undertaken to find the suitable genotypes of pigeon pea for higher yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2019-20 under AEZ-11. The soils of the experimental plots were clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block design with three dispersed replications. The experiment involved 31 pigeon pea accessions viz., BD-3111, BD-3112, BD-3113, BD-3114, BD-3115, BD-3116, BD-3117,BD-3118, BD-3120, BD-3121, BD-3122, BD-3124, BD-3125, BD-3126,BD-3127, BD-3129, BD-3130, BD-3130, BD-3131, BD-3133, BD-3134, BD-3135, BD-3136, BD-3137, BD-3138, BD-3139, BD-3140, BD-3141, BD-3142, BD-3143, BD-3144 and Naogaon local. Unit plot size was 1m x 10 m and seeds were sown in rows with a spacing of 1 m. The seeds were sown on 09 May 2019. In the experimental plots fertilizers, @18-24-30-18-2.0-1 kg ha^-1N-P-K-S-Zn and B were applied during final land preparation (FRG-2012). Fungicide, insecticide application and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Five plants were selected randomly from the middle rows of each entry. The recorded data were statistically analyzed and the mean values were adjusted by LSD at 0.05 levels of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

Days to 50% flowering, duration of flower, days to maturity, plant height (cm), number of primary branches per plant, number of pods per branch, pod bearing length, number of seeds per pod, number of seeds per plant, 100-seed weight (g) and yield per plant (g) differed significantly among the accessions. The duration of the flower was varied from 187 days to 256 days. The minimum duration of flower (187 days) was observed in Naogaon Local where maximum duration (279.00 days) was found in the BD-3114 genotype. Days to podding varied from 196 to 279 days. Among the genotypes, Naogaon Local showed minimum duration to maturity (280 days), 20 accessions gave maximum duration to maturity (337 days) and 10 accessions gave moderate days to maturity (285−299 days). Plant height varied from 250 to 363 cm while 19 accessions were long (329−363 cm), 12 accessions were medium height (250−328 cm). The number of primary branches per plant varied from 2.70 to 9.00 while10 accessions showed the highest number of primary branches per plant (4.40−9.00), 21accessions gave the moderate number of primary branches per plant (2.70−4.40). The number of pods per tertiary branch varied from 11.22 to 35.17, among the germplasm 13 accessions showed the highest number of pods per tertiary branch (above 20), 18 accessions gave the moderate number of pods per tertiary branch (below 20). Pod length varied from 3.77 cm to 5.22 cm. The number of seeds per pod varied from 3.77 to 4.67. 100-seed weight varied from 5.11 g to 26.10 g. Among 31 genotypes, Naogaon Local showed the maximum 100-seed weight (26.10 g), 11 accessions gave moderate 100-seed weight (10−20 g) and the rest 19 accessions produced a minimum 100-seed weight (5−10 g). Yield per plant varied from 15 g to 587 g, where Naogaon Local and BD-3121 gave higher yield (587 g and 328 g per plant, respectively), 20 accessions were moderate yield (101-295 g per plant) and the rest 9 accessions were low yield (15−100 g per plant). The lowest seed yield (15 g per plant) from BD-3131 pigeon pea accession.
