The purpose of the study was to determine the present scenario and problem confrontation of local boro rice (LBR) cultivation in two south western districts of Bangladesh. Data were collected for 100% of the LBR growers of 38 farmers of four villages namely Teligati and Rajeshor under Morrelgonj and Sarankhola upazila, respectively of Bagerhat district and Hybatpur and Ratanpur under Shyamnagar and Kaliganj upazila, respectively of Satkhira district through personal interview during 10 to 29 May, 2014. Data on LBR cultivation, yield, sources of capital, sources of seed, power and irrigation water; use of manures, fertilizers and insecticides for LBR cultivation were recorded. The farmers of the study areas cultivated seven varieties of LBR e.g. Kaliboro, Kuchmuch, Ghanatara, Mollica, Adubali, Islampuri and Maishabilli rice. Majority of the respondents got low yield from LBR in both the districts. The main source of money for LBR cultivation was own source followed by bank in both the districts. Majority of the respondents used own seed and power tiller. Most of the respondents used pump in Bagerhat while, shallow tube well in Satkhira for irrigation water and urea as fertilizer. Among selected 21 problems, the most severe were salinity, labour cost, insecticides cost and deficiency of water in dry season. The majority of the respondents belonged to medium problem confrontation. Among 12 selected characteristics only organizational participation and extension contact showed a negative relationship with the problem confrontation of the respondents.

1. To analyze the selected characteristics of the respondents.

2. To identify the present scenario of LBR cultivation.

3. To identify the problems confronted by LBR growers.

The study was conducted in four villages of Bagerhat and Satkhira district considering the LBR growing area and its cultivation intensively. Study areas from where respondents were identified are shown in Table

1. All the farmers of selected four villages who cultivated LBR constitute the population of the study. A list of growers of selected villages was prepared with the help of local Sub-Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO) of the concerned areas. Total LBR growers were 20 and 18 at Teligati and Shyamnagar Sadar union whereas all (100%) the farmers were treated as sample size in Bagerhat and Satkhira districts, respectively. On the other hand, in Sarankhola and Kaliganj there was no LBR grower (Table 2).

An interview schedule was used as the data-collecting instrument. The interview schedule was prepared in Bengali for clarity of understanding the farmers of the study areas. Necessary corrections, alterations and modifications were made before finalizing the interview schedule. The selected individual characteristics of respondents and factors relating to message were the independent variables of the study namely, age, education, farming experience, family type, family size, farm size, annual income, cosmopoliteness, organizational participation, extension contact, training exposure and agricultural knowledge. Problem confrontation in relation with LBR cultivation was treated dependent variable. At the end of data collection from the respondents, the collected data were coded, compiled, tabulated and analyzed. Data were analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. SPSS 16.0 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) computer. program was used to perform the data analysis. Various statistical measures such as number, percentage, range, mean, standard deviations and rank order were used to describe the selected characteristics of the respondents of the study area. In order to find out the relationship between the individual characteristics of farmers and related to problem confrontation, Pearson's Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (r) was computed.

A study was carried out to know the present status and problem confrontation of LBR cultivation in two south western districts of Bangladesh. Data were collected from 38 farmers. All the respondents (20) of Bagerhat cultivated Kaliboro rice whereas the respondents (18) of Satkhira cultivated different varieties. Among the selected 21 problems salinity problem, labour cost, cost of insecticides, deficiency of water in the season were more transparent problem confrontation by the respondents. Most (86.84%) of the respondents had medium problem confrontation followed by high problem confrontation (13.16%). Among 12 selected characteristics only organizational participation, extension contact showed a negative significant relationship with the problem confrontation of the respondents.
