The study was conducted to investigate the effect of tillage intensity, fertilizer and poultry manure on yield and yield contributing characters of wheat. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three tillage treatments in main plot and fertilizer and poultry manure treatments in sub-plots which were replicated thrice. The unit plot size was 4 m x 2.5 m having spacing of plot to plot 1.0 m and between blocks 1.0 m. Tillage treatments were one passing of a power tiller (P,), two passing of a power tiller (P2) and three passing of a power tiller (P3). Fertilizer and poultry manure treatments were recommended doses of fertilizer @ 100 kg N, 18 kg P, 50 kg K, 20 kg S, 3 kg Zn and 1 kg B ha' (F,) and 70% of F, + poultry manure @ 5 t ha-1 (F2). The sources of fertilizer were Urea, TSP. MOP, Gypsum, ZnO and Boric acid. Plant height at harvest stage of wheat was the highest under P3 and F, treatments and the lowest under P, and F2 treatments. Number of effective tillers plants', spike length, spikelets spike-1, number of grains spike-1 and 1000-grain weight were maximum in P3 and F, treatments and minimum in PI and F2 treatments. The highest grain (3.48 t ha-1) of wheat was under P3F, treatments combination. Protein content of wheat grain was the highest under P3F, treatment. Grain yield of wheat was positively correlated with effective tillers palnt', spike length and 1000-grain weight.

Sharma and Saxena (1985) indicated that incorporation of poultry manure in to the soil increased maize yields besides improving soil P indices. Considering the above facts, the present investigation was under taken involving tillage intensity, fertilizer and poultry manure with the following objective: to study the yield contributing characters, yield and grain protein content of wheat due to tillage intensity as well as fertilizer and poultry manure application. 

The experiment was conducted at the Soil Science Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the winter (Rabi) season of 2006-2007. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design. There were two sets of experimental treatments viz. (1) three tillage treatments arranged in main plot and (2) chemical fertilizer and poultry manure treatments allocated into the sub-plots. The tillage practices used in this experiment were PI, P2 and P3 allowing one passing, two passing and three passing of a power tiller respectively. Fertilizer and poultry manure treatments were recommended doses of fertilizer @ 100 kg N, 18 kg P, 50 kg K, 20 kg S, 3 kg Zn and 1 kg B (F,) 4nd 70% of F1 + poultry manure @ 5 t (F2). High yielding wheat variety `Sourav' was selected as a test crop. Seeds were sown on 25 November 2006 and crops were harvested on 19 March 2007. All intercultural operation was given as per recommendation. Ten plants were randomly selected from each plot at maturity to keep records on yield contributing characters like plant height, number of tillers plant', spike length, number of spikelets spike', and number of filled grain spike' and weight of 1000 grains. The grain and straw yields were recorded and expressed as t ha-1 and weight of 1000 grains (gm) on 14% moisture basis. Plot wise randomly collected grain samples were cleaned and sun dried. The samples were dried at 65° C for 48 h in an oven and finally grounded by grinding machine and stored in containers for protein analysis. For determination of grain protein, total nitrogen content of grain was determined by modified Kjeldahl method (Jackson, 1962). The protein content in wheat grain was then estimated by multiplying the total nitrogen content in the grain sample with 6.25. The data were analyzed statistically (Gomez and Gomez, 1984) by F-test to examine whether the treatment effects were significant or not. The mean comparisons of the treatments were evaluated by DMRT (Ducan's Multiple Range Test). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) for different parameters was done by a computer package programme "MSTAT- C".
