Comparative Study of Target and Non Target Aquaculture Products of Shrimp Farm in Satkhira District, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in total of 30 shrimp ghers from 3 unions of Ashashuni upazilla and 3 unions of Kaligonj upazilla. The objectives of the study were to observe different non-target species in the ghers to determine the market value of non-target species and to compare the income between target and non-target species among the ghers in different locations. From each union 5 ghers were selected randomly and collected data through questionnaire. The data were then analyzed. Among 15 ghers of Ashashuni upazilla monoculture was practised in 14 ghers and polyculture was practised in one gher whereas at Kaligonj Upazilla, polyculture was practiced in most of the ghers. Availability of brackish water species was high in Ashashuni than Kaligonj. In Ashashuni upazilla, the average income per decimal from non-target species was Tk 61.14. Among them 88 % from the target species and 12 % from the non-target species. In Kaligonj upazilla, the average income per decimal from non-target species was Tk 18.28. Among them 96 % income was gotten from target species and 4 % income was gotten from non-target species. The possibility of entering the non-target species from river into the gher was higher in Ashashuni upazilla than Kaligonj upazilla.

Objectives:

In Satkhira region, there are many shrimp ghers where the farmers get extra benefit from these types of non-target species and they also use these fishes for their consumption. The salinity and surrounding environment are suitable for both brackish water and freshwater species and different types of crabs. Except few farmers, most of the farmers do not invest money for 'white fish' (carp) culture and management. So, the present study was undertaken in this area to determine the economic value of these non-target aquaculture products.

Methodology:

Study area: The study was conducted in total 30 shrimp (Penaeus monodon) ghers from 3 unions (Bardal, Ashashuni, Dargapur) of Ashashuni Upazila which was situated near the rivers and from 3 unions (Kushulia, Mothureshpur, Tarali) of Kaligonj Upazila which was situated far from the rivers. Each Union consists of 5 ghers which were selected randomly.

Data collection: Detailed information of all the studied ghers from the six unions were collected from the owners through a structured questionnaire. In case of gher with multiple owners, data were collected from the owner, who was considered more knowledgeable about the shrimp gher. The collected data were verified by interviewing the other owners. The market value of the target and non-target fish species was taken from the fish traders. Other information was collected from the farmers or gher owners. In the present study the following information was collected.

Gher ownership, information of real owner, gher area, types of culture, per bigha stocking ratio of fish, species found in ghers, expenditure for fish culture in the gher, total shrimp production, amount of income from shrimp sold, amount of white fish production, crab production, amount of consumed crab, amount of income from crab sold etc. All these are necessary for the proposed study.
