The study was conducted to investigate the status of food consumption. Data were collected from randomly selected six wards of Khulna City Corporation by using interview schedule. Data were collected on eight selected characteristics of the respondents. Most of the respondents were young to middle aged, having primary to higher secondary level of education, most were service holder and businessmen, most had low knowledge about food consumption, media exposure was medium and family income was very high to medium. Besides, data were collected on weekly total consumption of rice and rice made items, wheat and wheat made items, pulses and vegetables from the respondents' family. The plain rice is the staple food of the respondents; however, they rarely consume some amounts of polaw, cake and puffed rice. Total weekly consumption of plain rice by the respondents' family ranged from 1100 g to 45000 g with a mean 10564.16 g. Highest proportion of the respondents (96.67%) had medium to high rice consumption. They also intake wheat flour (atta) and other wheat made items. As a supplementary dish they like lentil, however, they are not a good consumer of other pulse items. Potato, brinjal, sweet gourd, bottle gourd and leafy vegetables occupied the major portion of their vegetable dish. However, they also intake other vegetables in considerable amount.

The study on collection of information on food consumption status of inhabitants in a locality has immense importance to prescribe a balanced diet for them. The main objectives of the study were: - To analyze some of the selected characteristics of the respondents - To identify the food consumption status of the people living in 6 wards in Khulna City Corporation (KCC).

The study has confined to six wards (ward no.4, 9, 20, 24, 26, and 29) randomly selected out of thirty one (20%) wards of KCC. Data were collected from 20 families from each of the selected wards. Data were collected by face to face interview using pre tested interview schedule by the researchers themselves during 26 June to 29 August 2009. Data were collected on some of the selected characteristics of the respondents and food consumption status of the citizens.

The age of a respondent was measured by counting the actual years from his birth to the time of interview on the basis of his statement. Education of a respondent was measured on the basis of his ability to read and write or year of schooling. A score of 'one' was assigned for one year of study, zero for no schooling and one for those who can sign his name only. Family size of a respondent was measured in terms of actual number of dependent members of the family. The occupation was identified based on his engagement for earnings. Here occupation was the diversified profession of the respondents. Food consumption-related knowledge of an individual was referred to the extent of knowledge about protein, carbohydrate, vitamin 'A', vitamin B', iron, winter and summer vegetables etc. Knowledge of housewife of the family or family head is the foundation of their food consumption pattern. The knowledge was measured by the total knowledge score about food consumption. The total assigned score was eight. Different kinds of health related problems of the respondents and their family members were noted down as reported by them. Media exposure refers to the exposure of the respondents with mass media i.e. newspaper and television. Respondents enjoy the nutrition related programmers in television, then it is yes and on the other hand it is no. If reading of newspaper is regular, then it is yes, on the other hand, it is no. Annual income of a respondent was measured in Bangladeshi Taka (BDT) on the basis of total yearly earnings from agricultural and non-agricultural sources (business, service etc) earned by the respondent himself/ herself and other family members.

The food consumption status was analyzed based on status of rice, wheat, pulses and vegetable consumption. Status was determined based on some parameters regarding the consumption of food items prepared by them.

Statistical measures, such as frequency, percentage, range, mean, standard deviation and rank order were used for descriptive data. The collected data were compiled, coded tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objectives of the study. Qualitative data were quantified by means of suitable scoring techniques. The analysis of data was done with SPSS version 11.5 .
