Employment Status of Rural Youth Trained by Youth Development Training Center at Khulna

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The main purpose of the study was to determine the employment status of the rural youth trained by Youth Development Training Center (YDTC). Data were collected from 60 randomly selected rural youths in Batiaghata and Dumuria Upazila under Khulna district who were trained from Youth Development Training Center (YDTC). Data were collected from the respondents through personal interview method using an interview schedule during 20th September 2007 to 28th February 2008. Three-fourth (75 percent) of the respondents received training on fish culture followed by poultry rearing (28.33 percent). The respondents under study were more interested to get/receive training on fisheries and poultry i.e. agricultural income generating sactivities rather than non-agricultural income generating activities. Majority of the respondents (70%) had high level of employment status. Only two trained respondents did not take any initiative for self employment in income generating activities. Among the thirteen selected characteristics of the respondents education and attitude towards technology showed a positive significant relationship with their employment status.

Objectives:

Objectives 1) To analyze the selected characteristic of the respondents (rural youths). 2) To determine the employment status of rural youths trained by the Youth Development Training Center (YDTC) in Khulna. 3) To explore the relationship between the selected characteristic of the rural youth and their employment status.

Methodology:

Locale of the study: Two upazilas of Khulna District namely, Batiaghata and Dumuria were selected purposively as the locale of the study. Among the two upazilas four randomly selected unions (Jalma and Surkhali unions of Batiaghata and Gutudia and Dumuria unions of Dumuria Upazila) were finally treated as locale of the study.

Sources of data and its collection: Data were collected from randomly selected 60 trained rural youths of Batiaghata and Dumuria Upazila of Khulna district. The rural youths were trained from the Youth Development Training Centre at Khulna. Data were collected from the respondents through personal interview using an interview schedule during 20 September 2007 to 28 February 2008.

Selection and measurement of the variables: The selected characteristics of the respondents were treated as independent variables, while the employment status of the respondents was considered as dependent variable. Measurement of employment status of the respondents: Before determining employment status of the respondents, they were asked to indicate the areas of training offered by YDTC to them. After that the employment status of the respondents was determined based on the participants' score in some selected areas of training as offered by the YDTC. A four point rating scale such as high involvement, medium involvement, low involvement and no involvement was employed against each of the areas of training and a score of 3,2,1 and '0' was assigned against the scale respectively. The mean participation score of the respondents was determined by dividing the total score obtained by respondents against each of the areas of training with the number of areas trained in. The mean participation score of the respondents could range from 0-3. Based on the mean participation score, the respondents' employment status was determined and they were categorized in the following ways.
