Fertility Status and Land Use Pattern of Some Soils at BAUphal Thana in the Coastal Area of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to characterize the potential fertility status and to furnish more basic data and provide a scientific database for better land use planning of Bauphal thana during May, 2009. Seven soil profiles were studied from the selected locations of the Bauphal thana for chemical properties (pH, EC, OM, OC, N, P, K, S, B, Zn, Pb, Cd, Mn, Fe and Cu). The fertility status of all the soils ranges from low to medium. The EC value were (0.45 - 4.12 dS m-1) indicated non saline to slightly saline. The pH value of soil samples (8.46 - 8.87) indicated alkaline in nature. The content of OM (0.89 - 8.39%) that is very low to more than optimum level, N (0.04 - 0.42%), P (1.08 - 6.58 µg/g), K (0.15 - 0.25me/100 g), B (0.19 - 0.40 Agg) were below the optimum level and S (11.48- 59.22 Agg1), Ca (11.05 - 19.76 me/100g), Mg (1.36 -1.94 me/100g) contents were above the optimum level. Land use pattern is mainly cultivation of rice, around 30% lands are used for plantation forest and rest of the area is used for shrimp cultivation.

Objectives:

To meet the increasing food demand these char lands should bring under proper cultivation. For this purposes, it is necessary to know the fertility status of those soils properly as well as land use pattern should be taken under consideration. To keep this concept in mind, the present work was done to evaluate the potential fertility status of the soils in char land areas and to set proper land use pattern of those area.

Methodology:

For soil sampling, a total of seven char land areas were selected viz. Char wadel, Char Barret, Char Kachua (1), Char Kachua (2), Daira Kachua, Char Ray Shaheb and Char Miazan. The soil samples were collected from three different depths of 0-15 cm, 15-30 cm and >30 cm from the surface by composite soil sampling method as suggested by the Soil Survey Staff of the USDA (USDA, 1951). Chemical analyses were carried out by following the procedures described by I. Huq and D. Alam (2005). Soil pH was determined electrochemically with the help of glass electrode pH meter (Jackson, 1973). The EC of the soil was measured by the help of EC meter (USDA, 2004). The CEC were determined by flame photometric method (Jackson, 1967). OC were determined by Walkley and Black's wet oxidation method (Jackson, 1962). Total N was determined by MicroKjeldahl's method (Jackson, 1967). Total contents of Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd were determined by atomic absorption spectrometer (I. Huq and D. Alam, 2005). The available Na and K were determined by flame emission spectroscopic method (Jackson, 1967). Available Phosphorus was determined by Molybdophosphoric blue colour method (Jackson, 1967). Available sulfur content was determined by turbidimetric method (Jackson, 1973). B was determined by Perkin-Elmer Lambada 11 (2.2) UV/VIS spectrometer at 420 nm (USDA, 2004).
