Rangpur Dinajpur Rural Service (RDRS) has taken up various programmes for the development of women beneficiaries in homestead agricultural activities. The main focus of the study was to determine the extent of contribution through RDRS in homestead agricultural production. Attempts were also made to describe some selected characteristics of the women beneficiaries and explore the relationship with their contribution. Ninety women out of 180 were randomly selected from villages namely Sonahar and Mollikadaha under Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh district. A structured interview schedule was used to collect data by researcher herself from the women during March, 2008. Co-efficient of correlation (r) was computed in order to explore relationship between the selected characteristics of the women beneficiaries and their contribution. The highest (47.78 percent) of the women had medium contribution in participating homestead agricultural production, while 28.89 percent had low contribution and 23.33 percent had high contribution. The findings showed that age, annual income, training exposure, communication exposure and innovativeness were found significantly correlated with contribution of women in homestead agricultural production. Out of six aspects in homestead agricultural production by the women contribution of poultry raising, vegetables cultivation and post harvesting activities were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd position respectively. The findings of the present study may provide valuable guidelines for the researcher, planner, policy makers of GO and NGO for improved programme management for the upliftment of rural women.

Based on the above discussion, this study was designed mainly with the following objectives: i) to find out the contribution of RDRS beneficiaries (women) in different selected activities of homestead agricultural production, and ii) to determine and explore the relationship between the contribution of women in homestead agricultural production and their selected characteristics.

The study was conducted in two purposively selected villages Sonahar and Mollikadaha under Debiganj upazila of Panchagarh district at Bangladesh. RDRS activities are more concentrated in these two villages as compared to other villages. The rural women beneficiaries who were involved in RDRS and contributing in homestead agricultural production were the population in this study. So, the population of the study comprised of 180 women of the two villages (Sonahar 100 and Mollikadaha 80). A total of 90 (50 percent) women beneficiaries were randomly selected as the sample of the study (Sonahar 50 and Mollikadaha 40). Data were collected from the respondent during 1st March, 2008 to 31 March, 2008 through personal interviews. The contribution of women in homestead agricultural production has been treated as dependent variable. For measuring the contribution of women in homestead agricultural production, 10 items were selected under each of the following activities:

a) contribution in homestead vegetable cultivation, b) contribution in post-harvest activities, c) contribution in poultry raising, d) contribution in livestock rearing, e) contribution in tree (fruit and timber) plantation and f) contribution in backyard fish cultivation.

The respondents were asked to indicate their extent of contribution to each of the total 60 items along a three point scale: no contribution, occasional contribution and regular contribution with corresponding scores of 0, 1 and 2 respectively. The contribution score of a rural woman was obtained by summing her scores for all the 10 items included in a particular activity of homestead agricultural production. Thus, the contribution score of a rural woman under each of the 6 areas of activities related to homestead agriculture could range from 0-120, zero indicating no contribution and 120, very high contribution.

The selected characteristics of the respondents which have been treated as independent variables are age, education, family size and farm size were measured by using the measuring units of year, year of schooling, number of members and hectare respectively. The annual income was measured on the basis of total earning annually by all the members of the family and expressed in Taka. The farming experience of the women was calculated by the years completed in doing homestead agricultural activities. Training exposure of a woman was measured based on the training received by the respondents on six aspects of homestead agricultural production from different organizations. Each training was assigned one score in respect of training receipt. Communication exposure, organizational participation, participation in decision making process and innovativeness were measured by as usual methods which are exiting in social science. Descriptive statistics such as number, percentage, distribution, mean and standard deviation were used in describing variables of the study. Correlation analyses were employed for exploring the relationship between dependent and independent variables.
