An experiment was conducted at Rajshahi Sugar Mills Ltd. Area, Rajshahi, Bangladesh during 10 November, 2004 to 04 December. 2005 to find out the most suitable planting materials for obtaining higher yield and economically viable of sugarcane. There were seven planting materials viz. conventional three budded setts, single budded soil bed settling, two budded soil bed settling, polybag settling, Rayungan two shooted slip, Rayungan single shooted slip and bud chip settling. Significantly highest number of tiller (247.42 x 103 ha-1), millable cane (111.42 x 103 ha-1), cane yield (114.72 t). sugar yield (10.01t ha-1). juice quality were recorded from the T4 (Polybag settling) treatment. The lowest number of tiller (175.24x 103 millable cane (92.36 x 10' ha-1), cane yield (72.63 t ha-I), sugar yield (5.21 t ha-1) and juice quality were recorded from T, (conventional 3 budded setts) treatment. The highest benefit cost ratio (BCR) was also obtained in T4 (Polybag settling) treatment and the lowest BCR was (1.45) in conventional 3 budded setts (T1) treatment. The result indicates that the T4 (polybag settling) treatment was superior to any other planting/transplanting materials in respect of cane yield, sugar yield and cash income.

Out of which Spaces Transplanting (STP) is a planting method which received considerable attention in recent years. In STP techniques form different types of settlings viz. single budded soil bed settling, two budded soil bed settling, polybag settling, Rayungan two shooted slip, Rayungan single shooted slip and bud chip settling are transplanted in the field. Therefore, the present investigation has been formulated to find out the most suitable planting materials for obtaining higher yield of sugarcane and to identify economically viable planting material compare to existing ones.

The experiment was conducted at Rajshahi Sugar Mills Zone, Rajshahi, during 10 November, 2004 to 04 December, 2005. The experimental site belongs to High Ganges River Flood Plain Soils, Agro ecological zone (AEZ -11) of Bangladesh. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The unit plot size was 8 m x 6 m. The sugarcane (var. Isd 32) was used as test crop. The treatments were as follows: T1 : Conventional three budded setts T2 : Single budded soil bed settling T3 : Two budded soil bed settling T4 : Polybag settling T5 : Rayungan two shooted slip T6 : Rayungan single shooted slip T7 : Bud chip settling.

Conventional three budded setts and other settlings were planting/transplanted in respective plots during 10 November, 2004. The fertilizers urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and ZnSO4 were applied @ 325, 250, 180, 190 and 9 kg ha-I, respectively. Full quantity of TSP, Gypsum, ZnSO4 and one-third of MoP were applied in trench and mixed with soil prior to transplanting of settlings. One-third of urea was applied at 21 days after transplanting (DAT). The second dose of (1/3rd) urea and 1/3"I MoP were applied as first top dressing at 90 DAT. Final top dressing of rest urea and MoP were applied at 150 DAT. For sugarcane to control insect pests, chlorpyrifos (trade name: regent 3 GR) was applied @ 33 kg had in planting and carbofuran (trade name: furadan 5G) was applied @ 40 kg had in two splits from March to May, 2005. Other intercultural operations like irrigation, gap filling, weeding, mulching, earthing-up, tying and cross tying were done in time. Collection of data on yield and various yield contributing parameters of cane were done. Tiller population of sugarcane was recorded at 90, 120, 150 and 180 DAT. Millable cane and cane yield were recorded at harvest in the month of 4 December, 2005. Economic and statistical analyses on different parameters of sugarcane were done following the standard procedures.

Chemical analysis of sugarcane juice Chemical analyses of sugarcane juice for brix (%), pol (%), purity (%) and reducing sugar (%) were done at harvest of sugarcane. Randomly selected 15 sample cane stalks were crushed with a mini power crusher to .zet juice for analysis. Brix was determined by Brix hydrometer standardized at 20°C and sucrose determination was done using automatic Polarimeter (ADP-220) by Horne's dry lead method. Pol percent cane was calculated by the method prescribed in Queensland Laboratory Manual reducing sugars were measured by Lanc and Eynon method (Chen, 1985).

The highest benefit-cost ratio (BCR) was also obtained in T4 (Polybag settling) treatment and the lowest BCR was (1.45) in conventional 3 budded setts (T1) treatment.
