Prevalence of Gastro-intestinal Heliviinth Parasites of Buffaloes in Dinajpur District of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was carried out to detect the prevalence rate, seasonal variation of helminth infestation in the buffaloes during 2009 to 2010. A total of 232 faecal samples were examined of which 199 (85.8%) were affected with parasitic infestations as follows: Paramphistomum spp in 31.0%, Fasciola spp. in 27.6%, Trichostrongyles spp. in 9.1%, Haemonchus spp. in 6.5%, Trichuris spp. in 3.9%, Toxocara spp. in 3.9%, Strongyloides spin 2.2% and Moniezia sp. in 1.7%. The overall lowest, intermediate and highest prevalence rates of helminth infestation were 78.4% in summer, 83.3% in rainy and 93.47% in winter season respectively. The highest prevalence of helminth infestation (Paramphistomum spp, Fasciola spp, Trichostrongyles spp, Haemonchus spp) was recorded in the winter season.

Objectives:

The agro-ecological and geo-climatic conditions are favourable for high prevalence of helminthiasis in buffaloes. The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence rate of helminth infestation in buffaloes under the Sadar Upazila (Sub-district) of Dinajpur district.

Methodology:

The study was carried out for a period during July 2009 to June 2010, at the Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. A total of 232 faecal samples of buffaloes were collected and brought to the Microbiology Laboratory. About 15 g faecal materials were collected separately from each of the selected animals directly from the rectum or from freshly voided faeces in polythene bags and stored in the refrigerator for further examination within 2-6 hours. The samples were examined for parasitic ova using direct smear method, if negative for three samples, and then the case was considered negative. "Modified Stoll's Dilution Technique" was used. Briefly, 3 g of faeces were mixed well with 42 ml of water followed by added some glass beads and thoroughly mixed with stirrer. Well mixed sample (0.15 ml) was taken on glass slide by 1 ml syringe and covered with cover slip and placed under microscope for examination. The eggs were identified on the basis of morphological features described by Soulsby (1982) and counted. The counts were made from each sample and the mean of it was considered as EPG (Eggs per gram of feces). Three seasons namely summer (March-June), rainy (July-October) and winter (November-February) were taken into consideration for the experimental period. At the end of the study period, the results were scrutinized and family analyzed commensurations with the objectives.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that season has great influence on parasitic infestation. Although, the status of infestation was high all the year round, highest rate of infestation for different parasites except ascarids was observed during winter season. This may be due to the fact that animals were infested during late rainy season and eggs excreted in higher numbers during winter season. Chaudhuri et al. (1993) reported the similar findings. Eysker and Ogunsusi (1980) reported the higher rate of infection during rainy season. Dakshinkar and Sardyey (1982) found highest prevalence rate of parasitic during summer season.
