An experiment was carried out at the Soil Science Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during January to May 2006 to evaluate the effect of different organic sources of nitrogen on nutrient uptake by BRRI dhan 29 and on the fertility status of soil. The soil was silt loam having pH 6.48, organic matter 2.13%, total N 0.106%, available P 2.99 ppm, exchangeable K 0.116 me% and available S 20.58 ppm. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with ten treatments and three replications. Poultry manure, cowdung, mustard oilcake, sesame oilcake, raintree, sissoo and acacia leaves were used as organic sources of N with or without chemical fertilizers. The application of various organic manures did not affect the N, P and S contents of rice grain and straw. However, the N, P, K and S uptake was significantly influenced. The different treatments under study influenced pH, organic matter content, total N, available P, exchangeable K and available S contents of the post-harvest soil. As regards, the contribution of various organic manures on soil properties and availability of nutrients, the performances of poultry manure, cowdung, raintree leaf litter and different manure combinations were good.

The integrated use of fertilizer and manure is quite promising not only in providing greater stability in production but also in maintaining soil fertility (Nambiar, 1991). Hence, this study was undertaken with the objective of determining the effect of different sources of N on the nutrient uptake and content by BRRI dhan29 and also on soil fertility.

The field trial was conducted at the Field Laboratory of the Department of Soil Science, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during boro season of 2006. The experiment was set up in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. There were ten treatments as follows: T1 Control (No fertilizer) T2 100% RDN (Recommended dose of nitrogen) from urea T3 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from poultry manure T4 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from cowdung T5 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from mustard oil cake T6 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from sesame oil cake T7 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from raintree leaves T8 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from sissoo leaves T9 50% RDN from urea + 50% RDN from acacia leaves T10 100% RDN from organic sources (14% RDN from each organic source).

The total number of plots was 10 x 3 = 30, each plot measuring 4 m x 3 m. Rice var. BRRI dhan 29 was used as the test crop.

The full doses of organic manures were applied 8 days before transplanting of rice seedlings and the manures were mixed thoroughly with the soil of the plots. The recommended dose of N was 100 kg ha-1. Urea fertilizer was applied in three equal splits, the first dose at seedling establishment and the remaining doses at active tillering and panicle initiation stages of crop growth. The recommended doses of P, K, S and Zn @ 15, 40, 10 and 1 kg ha-1 from TSP, MOP, gypsum and zinc oxide, respectively were applied as basal in all the plots except control plots. The seedlings of 35 day old were transplanted in the experimental plots on February 5, 2006. The intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The crop was harvested at maturity on May 30, 2006.

Yield data were recorded, the representative plant samples (both grain and straw) were collected plotwise and prepared for chemical analysis. Soil samples were collected from each plot at a depth of 0-15 cm in two installments, initially before fertilizer application and finally after crop harvest. Both plant and soil samples were analyzed to determine N, P, K, and S contents. The total N, available P, exchangeable K and available S were determined following semi-micro Kjeldahl method, modified Olsen method, NH40Ac extraction method and CaCl2 extraction method respectively. The data were statistically analyzed to test the level of significance and the means were ranked by DMRT at P55% (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Although the application of only chemical fertilizers exerted a more pronounced effect on nutrient uptake by rice crops, it was less effective in improving the soil fertility status in comparison to the application of organic manures alone or the combination of manures and fertilizers. So, it is necessary to add organic manures (viz, poultry manure, cowdung, raintree leaves) together with chemical fertilizers to maintain soil fertility for sustainable crop production.
