Commonly Used Chemotherapeutics in Fish Hatcheries at Jessore Sadar Upazila, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Aquaculture in Bangladesh is large of extensive type and the available information on the use of chemotherapeutics in culture systems is very limited. Concerning this, a field survey was conducted from May to July, 2005 to study various drugs and chemicals used in fish hatcheries in brood fish management and fry production. The data were collected from twelve fish hatcheries from various thanas (Chandra, Arabpur, Palpara etc.) of Jessore sadar Upazila, Jessore. The results of the investigation on hatcheries revealed that different types of antibiotics (oxytetracycline, erythromycin, chloramphenicol, oxolinic acid), insectisides (sumithion, nogos, dipterex, ustaad etc.) and other chemicals (malachite green, copper sulphate, bleaching powder, methyline blue, quick lime etc.) had been used in successful hatchery operations to prevent various bacterial diseases (vibriosis, fin and tail rot disease, abdominal dropsy, pseudomonad infection etc.). Among the antibiotics used in hatcheries, oxytetracycline was the most common. The result also revealed that most of the hatchery operators did not follow proper application methods. Urgent initiatives should be undertaken so that the farmers, as well as hatchery operators, could be able to apply various chemotherapeutics properly. Further research must be done on recommended dosages, usages, method of application and effectiveness of various chemotherapeutics to develop the proper fish health management in aquaculture.

Objectives:

Prevention is, as always, the best medicine. For this reason, the processes of the hatchery activities are largely influenced by a number of chemotherapeutics as preventive measures. However, to date, there has been no published literature available on fish chemotherapeutics usage in Jessore Sadar Upazila, Jessore district. This survey attempts to know the usual chemicals and drugs widely used in therapeutics, prophylactic treatments practiced in Jessore district based on the information collected from the farmers and hatchery operators.

Methodology:

Selection of the study area: Since the use of chemotherapeutics was the main concern of this study, a field survey was conducted on twelve fish hatcheries from various thanas (Chandra, Arabpur, Palpara etc.) of Jessore Sadar Upazila, Jessore. The selected areas are well-known shrimp hatchery areas in Bangladesh.

Reconnaissance survey: After selecting the study area, a reconnaissance visit was conducted to gain a clear idea about the study area and to prepare an effective questionnaire for the study. After reconnaissance, special precision was maintained to prepare a well-defined and structured questionnaire. Collection of data: The data were collected from May to July 2005 when the commercial operation was going on in the full swing through a structured questionnaire.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the products used by the hatchery operators usually have a variety of trade names and there was little information available on their effectiveness and impact on the environment and public health. In our observation, it was found that all of the products come from aboard and are available to the farmer and hatchery operator through local distributors. Drug companies formulate drugs and these are sold illegally. Even to date, Indian chemical suppliers remain in the market of Jessore district. The main constrain of chemical use in the hatchery is the lack of consciousness of the farmers as well as hatchery operators about chemicals, their doses, and method of application. There is an urgent need to integrate chemotherapy with fish health management techniques instead of directing the effort solely towards the use of chemotherapeutics.
