Effects of Deworming on the Growth and Milk Yield of Indigenous Cattle

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out at two selected villages of Jessore district, Bangladesh with a view to assessing the effects of deworming on the growth and milk yield performances of indigenous cattle. A total of 140 cattle were selected randomly from 50 farmers in two villages of Jessore District. Seventy cattle were treated with deworming agents and the rest half was not dewormed. Initial and final body weight was taken to determine the growth rate. A milk yield record of 11 dewormed and 12 control animals were taken regularly. The effects of deworming were found significant (P<0.05) on both growth rate and milk yield. The growth rates (g/d) of untreated and de-wormed cattle were 109.79±16.60 and 172.95±21.11, respectively. Milk yields (kg/day) were 2.02±0.18 and 2.45±0.12 for untreated and de-wormed cows, respectively. Considering the above findings it can be concluded here that the routine anthelmintic treatment of cattle is essential to get better growth and milk production.

Objectives:

To ensure optimum production in terms of growth and milk yield proper anthelmintic treatment is necessary. Considering these views in mind the present study was undertaken to assess the effects of deworming on the growth and milk yield performances of indigenous cattle in a selected area of Jessore District, Bangladesh.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at two selected villages of Jessore district, Bangladesh. Total of 140 cattle from 50 farmers were selected randomly from two villages namely Monohorpur and Kaemkola. The study was conducted in farmers' management conditions from December 1999 to March 2000. Seventy animals were provided deworming medicine (Fasinex bolus) as per the recommendation of the manufacturer and 70 animals were not treated with deworming agents (control). The animals selected for the study were indigenous zebu cattle. The age of the animals ranged from 3 months to 4.5 years. Out of 70 dewormed animals, 42 were male and 28 female, where among control animals number of males and females were 38 and 32, respectively. The animals were grazed during the daytime and confined at night. The animals were provided rice straw twice daily. Milking animals were provided concentrate feeds. The initial body weight of the animals was taken immediately after the onset of the study and the final body weight was taken at the end. The body weight was taken.

Records on milk yield of treated and 'untreated animals were taken regularly throughout the study. Among 70 control animals, 10 were sold and 14 animals were sold among dewormed animals. The number of milking cows was 12 and 11 for control and dewormed animals, respectively. Data were analyzed using a statistical package for social science (SPSS, 1999) for mean, standard error (SE), and analysis of variance (ANOVA).

Milk yields (kg/day) were 2.02±0.18 and 2.45±0.12 for untreated and de-wormed cows, respectively. Considering the above findings it can be concluded here that the routine anthelmintic treatment of cattle is essential to get better growth and milk production.
