A three-month study was conducted to identify the vital abiotic factors that affect the prevalence of Ruppia maritinza in the traditional shrimp culture ponds. Among six experimental ponds, three were with R. maritima and the other three were without R. maritima. Water depth, pH, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, salinity and transparency of the ponds were measured from three ponds having R. maritima vegetation and compared with those measurements from three ponds having no R. maritima vegetation. These abiotic factors have been reported to affect the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the six ponds. The three ponds having R. maritima vegetation and clay-loamy bottom had salinity, pH, alkalinity, transparency, and water depth data which were quite different from the data obtained from the ponds having no R. maritima. But dissolved oxygen parameters for both groups of ponds did not show any significant difference. The significant difference among the means of salinity, pH, alkalinity, transparency, and water depth between the ponds with and without R. maritima suggest that these abiotic factors contribute substantially to the water quality parameters of shrimp ponds and thereby to their biotic parameters of them

It is a common belief among the shrimp farmers that R. frnaritima help to boost up shrimp and fish production. However, scientific study of R maritima in this regard is still lacking. Considering the significance of R. maritima as a food source and its probable economic benefit on shrimp and fish production, it can be stated that extensive research should be carried out on this aquatic vegetation. Therefore, an experiment was designed to study the prevalence of R. maritima in the commercially cultured shrimp ponds. The primary objective of this study was to compare different abiotic environmental factors of the ponds depending on the prevalence of R. maritima.

The study was carried out in six traditional shrimp ponds at Pania village in Kaliganj Upazilla, under Satkhira and these ponds were divided into two groups each consisting of an equal number of ponds based on the presence of R. maritima. R. maritima was identified according to the process described by Verhoeven (1979). Data were collected fortnightly from the six shrimp ponds during the months of March through June. Selected abiotic factors such as, pH, salinity, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen (DO), transparency and water depth were determined. The transparency of sampling points was measured by secchi disk. The average distance of disappearance and reappearance of the disk was taken as the secchi depth. The DO, salinity, and alkalinity value was directly measured by a DO meter, a hand refractometer, and an alkalinity meter respectively. The data were categorized and analyzed mainly based on descriptive statistical analysis using MS Excel and SPSS software. Independent samples t-test and group statistics of salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, transparency; total alkalinity and water depth were conducted using SPSS ver.12. Levene's test was conducted to test the homogeneity of variance.

The study reveals the favourable abiotic factors that influence the prevalence of R. maritima in shrimp ponds. It has been found that the ponds that have R. nzaritinza vegetation have higher salinity, pH, alkalinity value, better water transparency and lower water depth than the ponds having no R. maritima. The dissolved oxygen (DO) value does not have any significance on the prevalence of this vegetation. The result indicates that R. maritima vegetation grows better in an environment where there is higher salinity, pH, and alkalinity value, and water is transparent and shallow. Further research is required to determine the suitable range for the prevalence of this aquatic vegetation in the shrimp culture ponds in southwestern Bangladesh. It is also recommended to study the economic significance of R. maritima vegetation on the overall shrimp production of a farm.
