Present Status, Management Techniques and Benefits of Private Woodlot at Gangni Upazilla in Meherpur District

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study describes the present status, management techniques and benefits of private woodlot in Gangni upazilla of Meherpur district. Data were collected from randomly selected 30 woodlot owners of the survey area during January to June, 2005 on the socio-economic condition of the farmers, present status, management techniques and benefits of the private woodlot. The majority of the respondents use agricultural land, one-fifth (21%) of respondents use fallow land and the rest use homestead areas for raising woodlots. Most (96%) of the respondents practice woodlot on their own land and very few of the respondents practice woodlot on leased land. The woodlot owners are aware of the management practices, i.e. preparation of land, weeding, cleaning, thinning, pruning etc. All respondents take initiatives to protect their woodlot against grazing, human interference etc. The majority of the respondents have no fixed rotation for Mahagoni, sissoo, babla, kadam, lambu, jam, ghora neem plantation. Only 27% of respondents have a fixed rotation of 10 years for ipil-ipil plantation. The majority of the respondents increased their farm income through generating cash from the woodlot by timber, fuelwood, fruit, food etc. Underemployed agricultural laborers find alternative labor opportunities in the woodlot plantations. Land tenural problem, inadequate sources of planting materials, natural disasters etc. are notable problems.

Objectives:

The objective of this study was to identify the present woodlot status and management techniques of and benefits obtained by people from private woodlots in Gangni Upazilla of Meherpur district. This study can also help the people of other areas to identify their problems and mitigation measures and encourage them for raising woodlots on their fallow land, low fertile agricultural land, and homestead area.

Methodology:

Data were collected from randomly selected thirty woodlot owners out of 50 owners of Gangni Upazilla under Meherpur district. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from the respondents following personal interview method. Data collection was held during January to June, 2005.

Data were collected on some of the selected characteristics of the woodlot owners such as educational status, operational land holding, occupation and income. Data were also collected on present status, management techniques and benefits of the selected woodlots to satisfy the objectives of the study. The present status was determined in exploring of ownership pattern of private woodlots, ownership status of private woodlots, previous land-use systems, types of plantations, source of planting materials and types of seedlings for plantations. Management techniques of private woodlots were observed in terms of site preparation, weeding, cleaning, spacing, thinning, pruning, plantation maintenance, rotation and harvesting system. The benefits of private woodlots were determined in terms of cash, increment in income opportunity, timber, fuelwood, fruit, fodder, nutrition and utilization of wasteland and degraded land.
