In Vitro Screening of Carbendazim Fungicides Against Three Important Fungal Pathogen of Sugarcane

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An in vitro experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of ten different fungicides of the Carbendazim group viz. Bavistin 50WP, Avistin 50WP, Edvistin 50WP, Aimcozim 50WP, Agridazim 50WP, Evazim 50WP, Corozim 50WP, Syndazim 50WP, Forastin 50WP and Genuine 50WP against three important fungal pathogens of sugarcane Ceratocystis paradoxa, Colletotrichum falcatum and Fusarium moniliforme causing pineapple, red rot and wilt disease respectively. All the fungicides except Syndazim 50WP were found to be effective in controlling the said pathogens @ 0.1% concentration. Syndazim 50WP was found least effective against the wilt pathogen Fusarium moniliforme in laboratory conditions.

Objectives:

But very limited work has been done with chemicals particularly to inhibit or control the growth of major pathogens of sugarcane in Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Bavistin 50WP/Knowin/Genuine is reported as sett treating fungicide. However, comprehensive reports about some new fungicides under the Carbendazim group against the major pathogens are scarce. Therefore, the present study was taken aiming to evaluate 10 different fungicides (Carbendazim group) against three major pathogens like Ceratocystis paradoxa, Colletotrichum falcatum and Fusarium moniliforme of sugarcane.

Methodology:

The fungi Ceratocystis paradoxa, Colletotrichum falcatum and Fusarium moniliforme were isolated from the infected cane of BSRI research farm. The isolates were purified and maintained on oatmeal agar medium at 25±1°C prior to commencement of the experiment. Ten fungicides viz. Bavistin 50WP, Avistin 50WP, Edvistin 50WP, Aimcozim 50WP, Agridazim 50WP, Evazim 50WP, Corozim 50WP, Syndazim 50WP, Forastin 50WP and Genuine 50WP were tested to find out their efficacy to inhibit or restrict the growth of three major pathogens of sugarcane under laboratory condition using poisoned food technique (Dhingra and Sinclair,1985). The concentration used for each fungicide was 0.1%. All the fungicides in the requisite quantity were incorporated with sterilized oatmeal agar medium, shaken well to make the mixture homogenous and around 15-20 ml was poured in 90 mm Petri dishes in triplicate for each treatment. The media plate without any fungicide was served as control. After solidifying of the medium each pathogen inoculum was put at the center of each plate and incubated at 25±1°C and radial growth of the pathogens was measured at 2 d intervals. Thus four radial measures were recorded from each plate up to10 d of incubation.

All the fungicides except Syndazim 50WP were found to be effective in controlling the said pathogens @ 0.1% concentration. Syndazim 50WP was found least effective against the wilt pathogen Fusarium moniliforme in laboratory conditions.
