The experiment was conducted to study the effect of feeding urea molasses block on the productive and reproductive performance of Black Bengal Doe. In the present experiment, twelve does were blocked according to live weight and the blocked groups were assigned to four groups having 3 replications into each. Among these four groups, one group was assigned to control feeding (6 hours grazing) and another three groups were assigned to UMB feeding. These 3 treatments (T1, T2, & T3) were 50 g, 100 g and 150 g UMB with 6 hours grazing respectively. Live weight of individual doe was recorded fortnightly and live weight of individual kid was recorded weekly to study their growth rate. Average initial live weight, live weight at first kidding and final live weight of To, T1, T2, and T3 were 11.63, 15.4 and 13.0 kg; 11.6, 15.9 and 14.4 kg; 11.6, 16.2 and 15.3 kg and 11.6, 15.6 and 14.3 kg respectively but the final weight differed significantly (p<0.05) among the treatment groups. The average live weight gain of kid for treatments To, T1, T2, and T3 were 53.22, 67.51, 84.31 and 74.79 g/d respectively. Daily live weight gain was significantly (p<0.01) higher in UMB supplemented groups than the control group. Milk yield also significantly (p<0.01) differed between the control and UMB supplemented group which valued 190, 224, 275 and 225 ml/day for To, T1, T2, and T3 treatments respectively. The average postpartum heat period of treatments To, T1, T2, and T3 were 110, 88.6, 50.0 and 61.6 days respectively, which differed significantly (p<0.01). Cost-benefit ratio estimated was 1:2.00, 1:2.50, 1:2.66 and 1:2.12 for the aforesaid treatments respectively. In conclusion, among the 4 treatments overall performances of 100 g UMB/d fed goats were more satisfactory than others.

A number of researches have been conducted to minimize these limitations by using Urea Molasses Block as supplementation and/or as a catalytic feed but no information is available on the doe. Keeping this view in mind, the present experiment was carried out to study the effect of Urea Molasses Block on productive and reproductive performances of Black Bengal doe, to identify the optimum level of Urea Molasses Block and to investigate the cost and return of feeding Urea Molasses Block as a supplement for Black Bengal doe. 

A village named Fakirakanda situated at Mymensingh sadar was selected for this study. The experiment was conducted from September 2005 to August 2006 with twelve Black Bengal goats. The approximate age of these goats were 6 months. All goats were allowed for 3 weeks to adjust with the experimental conditions and diet before starting the experiment. Twelve does were blocked according to live weight and the blocked groups were assigned to four groups having 3 replications for each. Among these four groups, one group was assigned to control feeding (6 hours grazing) and another three groups were assigned to UMB feeding. These 3 treatments (Ti, T2, & T3) were 50 g, 100 g and 150 g UMB with 6 hours grazing respectively. 3.9% molasses, 2.2% wheat bran, 2.1% rice polish, 0.7% urea 0.6% lime and 0.5% common salt were used for making UMB. The amount of UMB supplied per doe was 50 g, 100 g and 150 g for each of the treatment groups T1, T2 and T3 respectively. The total amount of UMB for each treatment was divided into half equally and offered in the morning and in the evening. 

All does were kept on bamboo slat at one corner of the farmers living house. Kids were kept with their mothers in the same place. Rice straw was used as bedding material and thin gunny bags were used over the body of the doe to protect them from cold in the winter season. The average length, width, and height from the ground level of each slat were 39" x 35" x 9" respectively. Productive parameters such as growth rate of goat, growth of kid and milk production of doe and reproductive parameters such as live weight at puberty, live weight at first kidding, number of services per conception, litter size, gestation length and postpartum heat period parameters were recorded. The statistical program "MSTAT" was used to analyze the data in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) and LSD was used to compare the means in case of significant difference.

Urea Molasses Block (UMB) has shown a positive effect on the performances of Black Bengal goats. In the case of live weight changes and milk production of doe and live weight gain of kids, better results were found in the 100 g UMB supplemented group (T2) than the other two supplemented groups (50 g and 150 g UMB /day /doe). In the case of reproductive performance; postpartum heat period of does and birth weight of kids, better results were also found in the 100 g UMB supplemented group (T2) than the other two supplemented groups. Cost-benefit analysis indicates that100 g UMB supplementation gives more benefit than others. From this experiment, it is clearly observed that 100 g UMB supplementation increase the performance of does and kids of Black Bengal goat.
