The fecundity was measured by the Gravimetric method. Fecundity of P. sarana was found to range from 34443.83±1723.12 to 65485.14±3286.53 from 100 samples having a total length of 172.67±2.07 to 222.71±1.38 mm, bodyweight from 166.33±2.73 to 221.0±1.15g and gonad weight from 18.67±1.21 to 56.71±0.49 g. The relationship between body length and fecundity was found to be polynomial of second-order of body weight and was expressed as: Y = 22137 - 303.8 X + 2.2431 X2. The regression equation established for fecundity on total body weight was Y = - 62461 +470.81 X. The above equation shows that the relationship between fecundity and the total weight was curvilinear. Both the regression coefficient was highly significant (P <0.01) and the equation expressed more than 87% of the variation in fecundity. A highly significant (P <0.01) linear relationship was found to exist between fecundity and gonadal weight.

Few attempts were made to study the fecundity of Hilsa ilisha (Shafi et aL, 1978), Puntius. stigma, Channa gachua (Bhuiyan and Rahman, 1984), Colisa fasciata (Banu et aL, 1984), Sarotherodcin nilotica (Miah and Dewan, 1984), Xenentodon cancila (Bhuiyan and Islam, 1990), Amblypharyngodon mola (Afroze and Hossain, 1990), Puntius gonionotus (Mustafa, 1991), Oreochromis nilotica (Bhuiyan and Afroze, 1996), Clarias batrachus (Faruq et al., 1996) and Gudusia chapra (Kabir et aL, 1998). But no precise information is available about the fecundity of P. sarana. Therefore, the present work has been undertaken to determine the fecundity of the endangered P. sarana with a view to generate information on the basis of need of the fishery biologists and hatchery operators.

Sample collection Estimation of the fecundity of endangered indigenous sarpunti The experiment was conducted for a period of three months from June to August 2002. Samples of P. sarana were collected from the experimental ponds of the Field Research Complex, Faculty of Fisheries, Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU), Mymensingh. During the above period, 100 samples were collected and brought to the laboratory to measure the total length and body weight of individual fish. Then the ovary of each fish was taken out very carefully and preserved in 10% buffered formalin with labeled vials for further study. The weight of the ovary was measured very carefully with the help of a sensitive portable electronic balance (Model HL 400 EX).

Fecundity estimation There are several methods for the estimation of the fecundity of fish. These are (a) Volumetric method, (b) Gravimetric method and (c) Von Vayer method (Lagler, 1956). The volumetric method and Von Vayer method have been found to be suitable for relatively large eggs. But the eggs of local sarpunti are comparatively smaller than that of any major carps which may lead to error in the estimation of fecundity by the Von Vayer method and Volumetric method. The gravimetric method was found to be more efficient than the other methods and gave fairly accurate results (Phillips, 1969). Several workers, viz, Rao (1963), Gupta (1968), Evans (1969), Doha and Hye (1970), Shafi and Quddus (1974 b), Dewan and Doha (1979), Islam and Hossain (1984) and Miah and Dewan (1984) have used this method in the estimation of the fecundity of various fishes. Therefore, the gravimetric method may offer the best possibility of minimizing error due to its simple and easy sampling technique.

In this method, the ovaries were dissected out by a pair of scissors. The external connective tissues were removed from the surface of each pair of ovaries. The moisture of the ovaries was removed with the help of a blotting paper. The weight of the ovaries of each fish was measured with the help of an electronic balance. Then 20 mg of each ovary was taken separately from anterior, middle and posterior portions of each lobe accurately. The number of mature and maturing eggs from each portion was found out separately by actual counting. The mean number of eggs in 20 mg was determined and then multiplied by the total weight of the ovary, which gave the total number of eggs i.e., the fecundity of respective fish.

Statistical analysis Statistical packages MICROSTAT and EXCEL were used to determine correlation coefficient (R2) between total length and fecundity, body weight and fecundity, and gonadal weight and fecundity following the methods of Zar (1984).

The relationship between fecundity and the weight of P. sarana was found to be curvilinear. A similar result was found by Yuen (1955) and Gupta (1968). Gupta (1968) also observed a linear relationship between fecundity and ovary weight which was similar to this study. But the relationship between fecundity and length of P. sarana was found to be cubic by Safi and Quddus, 1974b and Sinha, 1975. Present findings are more or less similar to the above reports. The present study also indicates that this species belonging to the same size group had to vary in a number of eggs in their ovaries. Lagler et al (1967) reported that the number of eggs produced by an individual female was dependent on various factors like size, age, and condition of the species. In this study, it was also observed in some cases that the fecundity of some larger fishes was much less than that of some smaller fish. This type of variation was also reported by different workers.
