A field study was carried out at Tista Meander Floodplain Soils of Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur during the rabi seasons of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. The objective was to evaluate the response of hybrid maize (Pacific-11) to lime and boron. Lime from the source of Agricultural lime and dolomite @ 2 t/ha along with three levels of boron (0, 1.5 and 3.0 kg/ha) were included in the study. A blanket dose of the N P K S Zn and cowdung @ 300, 50, 125, 20, 4 kg/ha and 5 t/ha were also used in all the treatments plots. It was evident from the two years results that both lime and boron had significant influence on the yield of hybrid maize at the acidic as well as boron deficient soil of the experimental site. Dolomite produced 62 % higher yield over boron-lime control (LoBo). As a source, dolomite produced a 12% higher maize yield than Agricultural lime. The highest grain yield (8.10 t/ha) was recorded with the highest level of Boron @ 3.0 kg/ha which was 29 % higher compared to Boron control (Bo). The integrated effect of lime and boron was highly significant and dominantly influenced the grain yield and other yield attributes of hybrid maize. The highest mean grain yield (8.34 t/ha) was obtained with the combined effect of dolomite @ 2 t/ha and boron @ 3.0 kg/ha and 68% higher over lime boron control (LoBo) plots yield. Although the highest gross margin (Tk. 40,067/ha) was found with the aforesaid treatment (dolo chun + B3.0) highest Marginal Rate of Return (754 %) was recorded with the application of Agricultural lime @ 2 t/ha and boron @ 3.0 kg/ha which was economically profitable for hybrid maize production.

The experimental evidence revealed that in boron deficient soils, boron significantly responded to grain set, grain per ear, and grain yield by reducing the severity of wheat sterility in South and Southeast Asia (Karki, 1995, Pant et al., 1998, Hossain et al, 1997, Bingham et al., 1981, Das et al., 1998). Under the above circumstances, it was felt necessary to evaluate the response of hybrid maize to lime and boron for sustainable yield at Tista Meander Floodplain Soils (AEZ 3).

The study was conducted in the Tista Meander Flood Plain Soils of Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur (AEZ 3) during the rabi seasons of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. The initial soil samples were analyzed and presented in Table 1. In the experimental soil, the organic matter was low. The nutrient elements such as Ca, Mg, K, N, P, S, B, Mn and Zn were found to be below a critical level. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 x 9 m. There were seven treatments in the study combining two sources of lime (Agricultural lime and Dolomite) and three levels of boron (0, 1.5 and 3.0 kg/ha) with a blanket dose of N P K S Zn and Cowdung @ 300, 50, 125, 20, 4 kg and 5 t/ha. Agricultural lime and Dolomite @ 2 t/ha were well mixed with the soil one month before sowing of seeds. The initial soil pH of the experimental site was recorded to be 4.5. As a result of the incorporation of lime from two different sources change of soil pH was marked in individual treatments. Soil pH of each individual treatment after 30 days of liming and prior to maize seeding have been presented in Table I b. Boric acid was used as a source of boron. The total amount of P, K, S, Zn, B and 1/3rd of N were applied as basal during final land preparation. Rest 2/3rd of N was top-dressed in two equal splits at the Knee height stage and at tasseling stage. Hybrid maize (cv. pacific-11) was sown during the second week of December in both years maintaining a spacing of 75 x 25 cm. The irrigation and other necessary intercultural operations were done in due time. The crop was harvested on the last week of May/03 and the 1st week of June 2004. Data on the yield and yield contributing characters were recorded from ten randomly selected plants of each treatment. The analyzed data was adjudged with the least significant difference (LSD) test and Duncan Multiple range test (DMRT).

The essence of two years study revealed that boron and lime either in single and or in combination expressed encouraging results in terms of grain yield of hybrid maize. Moreover, the integrated effect of dolomite @ 2 t/ha and boron @ 3 kg/ha exerted a significant contribution to the yield of hybrid maize. The combined effect of Agricultural lime @ 2 t/ha and boron @ 3.0 kg/ha was found economically profitable. Considering the soil fertility and attaining high yield of hybrid maize, the fertilizer package along with the combination of dolomite @ 2.0 t/ha and boron @ 3.0 kg/ha may be recommended for hybrid maize production in the acidic soil at Tista Meander Floodplain Soils (AEZ 3) in Rangpur Region.
